I recently re read The Forest of Time and am from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Got me wondering if anyone has tried customs armies? These rules are set in the right period of tech described plus where it is heading. (I find sticking to historical setting hard for me)
Not sure what you are getting at with this post. Certainly never heard of these rules, but if they are very techy and/or fantasy that would explain why I have not heard of them.
I meant customs armies in these rules. It's a short novella about a world with the US colonies one independence but never became one nation. So instead it's like the Balkans post Ottoman but majority English speaking and tech development is really delayed. Machine guns just became a thing and star forts are still dominate.
I looked up the book.
It's alternate History as the ACW didn't resolve the on going disputes of the nation.
So Yes these rules can be used. The working sub title used by some of us for Square Bashing was "Bolt Action Rifles", so gives you a clue when these rules can be used from. Alternatively CWB, Western and Patrols in the Sudan can all be used up to the time of the Bolt action gun coming into being. Fight for Mexico which is set for 1910 plus. Depends on what sort of game, scale, type how large an army etc.
Obviously all these rules would need house rules to suit the period. Square bashing does have American and Mexican armies from the early 1900's in the Army book.
All of the above games do play on the Kitchen table(up to 6ft x 4ft table) and usually in a 2-3 hour time frame.
Some others might be able to help and quote me better on this ? But hopefully it gives you an idea ?

I actually meant creating their own army lists, with fictional bolt action settings. Like Forest in Time and Shadow and Bone. Both which would really lean to these rules.
Cant see any problems providing you pay the points costs and keep to a reasonable semblance of balancing the weapon types. After all, what can be imagined can be played out.

It will certainly be something different.
Go for it.
Do share your lists here or in the MILL.
