Finally finished them. I have a feeling this will be one of those armies forever losing shields. Maybe I should invest in more bluetack! Also notice I seem to have gone overboard with the skirmishers.
for some reason.
All the archer figures are Museum and the spears are from Old Glory, the figure for the command bases are from a variety of sources and yes. one base is suffering from a nasty invasion of goats!

Yep one goat has decided to eat the grass skirt instead of the fodder. Guess who is the next sacrifice!

First outing tomorrow. Martin want to try varieties of his amendments to archery.
Cheers
Derek
They look magnificent Derek.
A big job done well.
You will need some rough scenery.
John and i will bring some armies too.
Egyptians are a contemporary foe as are John's byzantines (??).
martin :)
That basing is very effective, and I particularly like those shields that have managed to stay on, Derek :D
Simon
The only real problem is that looking at the only contemporary pictures of them they look like Egyptians but darker and I didn't just want to do another Egyptian army so these are "real African". I know, the Egyptians made almost everyone look like themselves in their reliefs but....... Ah well, this is a loose federation of Nubian tribes and some mates looking for a scrap!
Derek
I used Mauritian (course and very beige) sand mixed with some chunky dark grit from Cape Verde. Yep, real international! There is a selection of various dry grass clumps as I wanted to use up a few partial sheets I have had hanging round for a while.
Derek
They do look very impressive Derek. Ìt is a very nice feeling to complete an army.
They look really good Derek
Stewart
Great stuff and love the shields especially.
Sheesh, these people from below the first cataract ::)
martin :)
Very nice Derek. And after hearing about them for so long, its great to finally see them.

Much better piccies now :)
Derek
Much better, Derek!
Looks like they may even be able to double up as Zulus too?
Simon
Indeed, a better picture. Nice one!
Yep, thats what I thought. Can never have enough random African warriors lol.
Apart from that in 3 games they are 2 wins and a draw. Can't be bad!
Derek
I have seen these and can attest to them being a lovely army.
martin :)
The question remains in my mind though.................... do I increase the size to make it a 900 point'er?
Derek
I suppose you could also pose the question, "How many 900 point games am I likely to play?" before committing yoursrlf to the painting time required.
Maybe consider an army in which Nubians make up a sizeable part.
Assyrians and NK Egyptians.
Assyrians would be a very nice army with Nubians, bronze armour, big chariots, cavalry (!) and plumes.
martin :)

Andy,
I'm afraid that is completely the wrong frame.
The correct context is "what excuse can I possibly find to buy more figures than I would ever be likely to field together, but would give me pleasure to paint, and would look pretty on the shelf?" ;D
Simon
Mine are in boxes so I don't want too many languishing unseen. Bad for the chaps' morale don't you know.
In boxes on shelves. at least they dont get dusty that way!
Started accumulating odds and ends for SYW period now for French Indian Wars. Good old Ebay
Derek
Another period to tempt me. Though I stand by my assertion that Last of the Mohicans isn't a great film ;D
But the music is incredible!
Before painting I will have to watch again to pick up what I can. Also The Patriot. ONly about 20-30 years difference between the French-Indian Wars and the AWI so I doubt uniforms will have changed much between the 2 times.
Derek
Most noticeably British grenadiers. Totally different headgear. I know the pace of change was a little slower in the C18th, but I remeber how different the British army looked in Iraq and Afghanistan compared to The Falklands.
Very true. Will have to watch out with grenadiers then. Mind you, 3 foot rules and all that I doubt anyone would complain too loudly.
