Here are some pictures of vikings axes etc from the longships period.
Notice how the axes are quite refined and not juts bludgeons.

Museum of London... recommend
Good photos, Martin - I spotted you'd added one to the PP website.
Reading into this period recently, I discovered how sophisticated the manufacture of axes and other weapons were e.g. the blade is often made separately from the remainder of the axe head, and subsequently joined on.
Looking forward to seeing some Carolingian axes soon ;)

Hope you enjoyed your couple of days in London.
Given the quality of Scandinavian wood craftsmanship of the Viking period it is hardly surprising their axes were pretty much unsurpassed...

It was very nice Les.
Saw Mary Poppins as well.
martin :)
I thought Julie Andrews was getting a bit old or was it at Madame Tussauds?
I've now got an image stuck in my head of a surreal Matrix-style mashup of Mary Poppins furiously lopping heads with a Danish longaxe to the tune of
'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'... :o
I am pretty sure it was Julie Andrews or possibly Boris Johnson?
martin :)
I hope that your club treated you well.
