Title: ACW early war East
Post by: Big Mike on August 09, 2022, 04:49:40 PM
Chris has started a short campaign based on the PP Civil War Battles rules. Our first encounter has been adjourned at Turn 9 ; to be resumed.
My Union boys are holding on Objective as Defenders having routed 2 units to 1 of mine.
Stream scenery has helped keep the Union right flank safe. The rail track adds some variety. The Union Cavalry are off to find 'Virgil Kane'....
More info on the Campaign to follow.
Mike.

That sounds fun, Mike.

I did enjoy our ECW lockdown campaign, but wish I knew after the event what the other side had been doing. Maybe a worthy topic for a little write-up in The Mill one day if you have the time and energy?

Brilliant stuff Mike.

Isit a map based campaign, or something more free flowing?

Sean,
Just using the standard CWB set-up. I have made some stream sections for an earlier Civil War and used my TT gauge rail tracks instead the transverse road.
Chris has formulated some Campaign rules and we plan to finish the game, using the stats to shape the second game.

Very early days, I am just kicking about some ideas. It is not a map campaign as such, I am looking at how Mike and I can run some consecutive games so that the armies are influenced by the game before. Current thoughts are that Brigades that are routed drop one level for the next game - so veterans become average raw of course remain raw. I need to give some though to losses and how they effect brigade numbers for the next game. Likewise how to reward the battle winner extra piggy dice for the pre game, up grading brigades  less attrition whilst at the same time ensuring the following battle is no too one sided.

In the current game we are down to nine on the count down with the attacker (me ) having the next turn. Mike hold the far objective (his base line), I have a raw brigade marching very slowly toward the objective on my base edge with Mike trying to get a brigade there too. I have managed to push Mike off the central objective but the Brigade I have holding it is about take a moral test so may well fall back. The difference in this game is we are also thinking about the army as a whole so Mike has a battered veteran brigade which he is trying to withdraw to preserve I on the other hand am cursing the loss of a veteran brigade because this will impact the next battle.

Early days yet but once the battle is finished Mike and I will think about how the result will impact the next game.

Looks interesting Chris, maybe an article for the mill when completed

That sounds like good work, Chris.

I like the idea of benefits to a winning force being limited to the pre-game of the next. Shpuld have a decent effect bit not overwhelmingly so.

Interesting campaign.

Have tried something like this in the past with other rules.

Perhaps you could have a pool of troops available (perhaps game strength plus 25% in reserve).

A Brigade that is lost can be added to the reserve pool at 3 bases. A Brigade that has routed looses 2 bases strength and returns to the reserve. A Brigade placed into the reserve has to spend at least 1 battle resting. Each battle a Brigade rests in reserve it regains 1 base up to a max of 6.

This will make a commander husband his troops and not make those last troops standing efforts.

I too have looked at a similar system. Some thoughts...

After battle

Apply losses like above for broken/lost bases
half bases returned to a full base  (light wounded), recover up to one further base as stragglers are gathered in on a 4/5/6 (plus one for attacker as it holds ground)

Defender looses 1 from next games warpoints for every two victory points it looses by.As it's off balance!

With CWB a corps can have 3 divisions, but normally only 2 fight so third can be reserve as above, recovering?I

Campaigns do add another level of thinking. You're more reluctant to attempt a last turn suicidal dash for an objective if incurred losses impact the next game.

In my ECW campaign, this is why I opted for Parley to extricate my army from the field in the knowledge that another turn would see potentially catastrophic losses.

Keep us up to date with how things go!
