Today I am mostly pre-shading trains

Ooh, that is fancy! They look very good like that.
Do please share what you do next with them.
Simon
Nice work! Airbrushing I presume?
They look good enough for a Russian winter already Simon.
martin :)
Cold to the touch!
QuoteAirbrushing I presume?
correct

base coated, and gloss varnished in prep for decals
Is that an "all over" green spray, letting the pre-shading do all the work, Simon?
Simon
Yes
An interesting effect... don't forget the weathering and general crud... we were forever scraping mud off the ladder rungs of my Dad's steam loco in foul weather and the funnel will accumulate soot as the steam blowers condense. You are also likely to get rust and grime staining running down from any protruding/projecting surfaces. The armoured skirts will mask any splashback from the rails...
Neil
Probably weathering after decals?
Simon
And then disaster strikes :o

Oh no - what happened there?
Simon
Cheapo aerosol varnish ... obviously cellulose based. Then imprudent 'is it dry moment'
Ouch...
I've had too many rattle can disasters - either priming or varnishing - so have gone right off the idea...
I hope you can fix it in short order.
Simon
Or you could leave it as lucky shot shell damage. The train has been hit but shows only superficial damage. Incidentally, I always varnish by hand after a couple of rattle can disasters in the past.
The only snag with that Leman is that cowl covers the regulator and throttle - so critical ops components.
A real shame about the varnish, SimonC. Possibly a localised scrape and paint patch may resolve the issues...
I do like Leman's idea though - so possibly a localised patch after earlier component replacement somewhat akin to painting a rigger's repair on the top RH corner of the top wing of a Sopwith Camel after a crunch. There is no way they'd be able to match the original colour with a field repair. You might even paint it red lead (the preferred undercoat to steel).
