I am interested but would a Turkish Army taking hypothetical advantage of Russia's attention being elsewhere be suitable? Elsewise I have no Army remotely linked into Russia. If so what about a Japanese Army trying to make hay for the same reason?
I did do a short search on google and couldn't find anything related to Turkey but did find some stuff about the Japanese taking some Siberian territory near Vladivostok "supporting" the White Russians and landed 70,000 troops for this purpose. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_intervention_in_Siberia and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siberian_intervention. Interesting. The second article briefly sets out other forces from the rest of the world and what they contributed/did. Could even field my Italians who fought with the Czechoslovak Legion.
I plead ignorance in the period on a world scale and yes, don't believe everything I see on wikipedia! Any clarifications?
Derek
I think if I did "play" it would probably be with my Italians who I know did get involved or maybe a Japanese army who sent 70k troops to "help" the whites. This has a certain amount of interest.
Would involve an amount of research and painting a new army (horrible thought at present). Haven't managed to find any specific info so far on the composition apart from overall numbers (just shy of 4k)
Derek
Here are the permitted armies, grouped by Red, White & Independent. We will attempt to play Red vs White (or Independants) for each game
White
32. British Revolution right wing army 1919
34. German Freikorps 1918-19
43. RCW White Army
44. RCW Semenov (white) railway army
45. RCW Archangel Field Force 1918-19
Red
31. British Revolution Left wing Army 1919
33. German Spartakist1918-19
40. Russian Red Army Early RCW
41. RCW Budenny's cavalry army 1918-20
42. RCW Red Shock Army 1918-20
Independant
39. Cossack Host 1900-22
46. RCW Ukrainian peasant army 1918-20
47. Polish Army 1919-1922

Hello Simon I have put the Event up in the PBI and Peter Pig Players Facebook groups.
With most of the relevant details etc.
Miles
Some one in 'Management' needs to put the event on the calendar!!
done
Sorry for delay
Thanks for organising it Simon.
I will get it on the PP website etc.
martin :)
Hello,
How many figures are required for these armies?
I fancy the Ukranian Peasents Army just because of current events.
Best wishes,
Martin Buck
4 bases of 3/4 figures - let's say 3
Professional armies about 10 battalions -120 figures
Conscript armies about 15-20 - 200-240 figures
Handful of MGs and artillery guns
i've spent a happy hour or so working out a couple of lists for my RCW project, one white and one red. Either will stand me in goood stead for the game day. Some questions for the room please.
1. What are tchanka's classed as in the rules? light a/c?
2. 'Colourful' regiments - was this an official designation, or just a way to refer to some of the more oddly coloured white units?
3. Would red units have exclusively the peaked hat, or a mix of headwear? I assume a mix.
4. Am I right in thinking the Czech Legio fought for the whites?
5. Did the Womens Death Battalions fight during the RCW or just the First World War? I realise they were few in number, but they would add character to an army!
Let me start the ball rolling here Sean
Tchankas are MG/Cavalry crossover. P74 in main SB rules.
Move and save as Cav (not good) shoot as MG (good).
Colourful. Often had coloured hats or tops. Including yellow!
Red units. Probably 1 type of headgear per unit. Not much mixing unless scruffy partisan type. Peaked caps are universal in Russian civilian and military. Furry hats in colder climes but they are expensive compared to peaked hats. Very rare indeed to see bare headed infantry. Russians like hats.
Peaked hats might often/usually be crumpled up and soft.
Czech Legion. Fought with the white railway force. There is a film DVD all about it. Good film but I forget the title (Kolchak??). Uniformed and efficient.
Women battalions appeared in several armies, both red and white. They were one of teh units that held out in the palace against Bolshevik revolutionaries.
The ospreys are all good, short and well illustrated.
Recommend we all listen to Beevor's "Russia" book in preparation.
The Film Zhivago is also excellent.
martin :)
Good to see you're back tackling those revolting Russians, Sean!
Simon
The Beevor book is his best in a while I think and has encouraged me to get the ball moving
Only 3 months until October!
Thanks Martin, Tchankas will be added to the order. Ill have a look for some yellow paint.
The film title above is either Admiral or The Admiral. One is about Admiral Kolchak and the other is about Admiral de Ruyter, but can't remember which is which.
Ticket now purchased.
Nice find Julian. How is your RCW army coming along? Just about to order mine...we should meet for a practice game!
Like them.
The French guns are the quick firing ones? Very useful!
Great idea.
Order going in today or tomorrow. May have to play with unpainted troops.
Is your army red or white?
Love it!
That looks like a great series of books, thanks Julian!
Thanks to Julian pushing the button I now notice that we are only 3 months away from the return of the much loved Squarebashing day.
My ticket is purchased and my armies planned; to be collected at the ECW battle day. I am hoping to get some practice games in using what figures I have with some proxying.
Who else has their ticket or plans to get a ticket? What army are you taking? And most importantly, what colour dice will you be using?
Also for Simon...
Will there be a collectors T shirt? I cant see it if there is qlready 😀
I need to confirm logistics (we're due to get home from hols the night before) and buy my ticket.
I thought the neo-fascists (er - "32. British Revolution right wing army 1919") would suit me well?
Simon
Pricey, but all you would need for two armies so not too bad. I've just managed to print off a sheet from this group from a few weeks ago.
A worthy objective and very topical. I'll try to do something nice for the day.
Nice objective, Julian. I like it !
That is a lovely looking scenic objective Julian. I like the way you have made it look well-used. How you did that would make a useful Mill article.
I recall Southport had a massive pale blue water tank, since demolished. Blue does seem to have been a favoured colour for these types of tanks, whereas the gas ones seem to have been mostly light grey.
A very satisfying feeling indeed ;D
Good work, sir. I need to get cracking with mine.
Any idea on numbers for this yet?
I'm busy with painting reds and whites, but will use whites given the choice. Not sure which dice to take yet, though I do have some nice white ones with a red star for a six. Luckily I don't need a tape measure as I'm not sure where mine is.
Well I'm coming Sean, as long as we make it back from holidays the night before!
Simon
Excellent Simon. Maybe we should have a rematch from our last game there a few years ago!
That may actually have been the last time I played, Sean!
Simon
QuoteAny idea on numbers for this yet?
Currently
12, but Julian just has dropped out. I've got covid right now, so I'm a bit behind on it all
Sorry to hear that Simon - best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Simon
No Julian?!? Thats a shame as he had painted an interesting army ☹
Here are the armies and the draw for the RCW SB day

Aha! General Commissar Clarkov will renew his acquaintance with General Fortesque Popinjay Parsnips. Vladivostok will be too good for him!
Had a practice game at the Keynes last night against Nick O. Sorry about the fuzzy overall shot. Other shots are the fights for the manor house and grassy knoll. Did wonder if you could move into a point barrage and if a voluntary withdrawal from an assault had to be towards the base edge and not away from the assault. Looking forward to the day. I think I need to use less cavalry.

QuoteDid wonder if you could move into a point barrage
Yes
Quoteif a voluntary withdrawal from an assault had to be towards the base edge and not away from the assault.
Yes - towards the baseline.
Is that Dennikens army I can see?
My Reds are taking notes and making plans to outflank Denniken. We shall show little mercy and no prisoners will be taken! The Proletariat will rise and crush the Imperialst foe!
I'm just joking of course. We Bolsheviks are lovely really.
If this isn't Dennikens army, and Simmo isn't in fact Martyn Simpson, I apologise.
It was indeed Denkin's army fighting it's way towards Moscow. :) and yes in this particular battle General Martyn Simmonov was in charge.
Here's my army for Saturday.
It is Army 40 - Red army, early war RCW. Army status is 9nly 23, so I expect to be scoring a few points at least!
Here is the army:
11 Reserve infantry
3 Regular infantry
1 Regular cavalry
2 Professional infantry (Kronstadt sailors!)
4 MGs
3 Field guns
By my reckoning, this comes to 618 points. So 2 wasted, but I'm ok with that.
The question is, dare you show me yours? 😳
Gosh, that's a lot of units, Sean.
I'd show you mine, but we're away and I left my list at home.
From memory, my British right-wing force is 13 infantry units, 5 MG, 3 guns, 2 tanks.
Should give your Bolshies something to chew on?
Simon
24 Simon. Just enough to squeeze everyone on the table!
Enjoy your hols mate and see you on Saturday.
Thanks to Simon for organising a very enjoyable event yesterday. And to my worthy opponents, Ray and Sean.
What I think I missed, though, amongst the individual trophies, was whether overall the day was a victory for the noble Whites or the skulking Bolshies?
Simon
Some photos from my Game 1 - the upstanding (if slightly right-leaning) Brits against Ray's horde of Cossacks.

That does indeed look like a fine game.
Thanks Andy. My Game 2 was against Sean's numerous infantry units of various qualities, fortunately many of whom didn't make it onto the table (although the zombie-like return of the first two dead Reservist units was an unwelcome feature of the rules!).

Thank you for your pictures, Simon... ;)
I like very much your buildings from the last photo.
It seems you had some fierce fights, from what I can see... :)
Cheers,
Xavier
Thanks Xavier. Unfortunately the buildings were not mine, but provided courtesy of the Burton club members, I think?
I did take the photos and paint my own troops, as well as making some of the other scenery, though ;)
Simon
Thoroughly enjoyed the day. Two great games against Denikens White army used by Martyn and then a British interventionist force played by Simon P.
Thanks to both for being great opponents and to Simon C for organising the whole shebang. Looking forward to the next one set in 1918. French for me!
Full report will come in the Mill.
