Stewart an I used the game originally designed for the old Square Bashing rules that I found on an old now long gone Square Bashing web site - I'm sorry I have forgotten the name of the site and author but it did contain a number of good WW1 game scenarios. We adjusted it to the new six inch squares, in terms of numbers the German Army heavenly outnumbers the BEF however It's staggered arrival along with the  limited canal crossing places does make it a difficult game for the Germans to win.

We tried adjusting the count down but ended up making it a ten turn game, we also gave the BEF extra shooting dice.  By limiting the game to ten turns and staggering the German arrival this does force the German Army to attack piecemeal which can mean getting bogged down at the canal (failed moral for casualties). The ten turn limit means the Germans can't just pound away with their artillery and await the arrival of all their troops as they won't have time to swamp the BEF.

In the end we played four games (including the two at Fisticuffs ) with the BEF winning three.

Chris
