Title: I hate heraldry
Post by: mellis1644 on September 14, 2021, 10:07:41 PM
Ok doing some 3rd crusade/12th cent knights and I dislike them a lot. Why did they have to have such complex heraldry to paint - yes I know really. I'm not sure why I keep trying but they do not look good. Sigh...

Still they have been on my painting table for years so I want to get them done so they stop staring back at me....

Come on Mel - C13th heraldry? Watch out if you go down the WotR route. Multiple quarterings are a real pain, but you are right - they do look great when finished. Of course, in the C15th you can always put the big man in his household livery to save time and eyesight, and at least most troops in the WotR no longer carried shields.

I'm afraid to say I have to agree with Leman, C13 is a doddle compared to the Crecy/WoTR period... and even to Sengoku Jidai samurai.
What is your particular issue with the heraldry? Perhaps the forum has helpful painting tips? I've hand-painted C12 and C13 without too much difficulty and am happy to share any insights...

Those do look rather lovely, Neil - great stuff!

And by hand too?!

Good luck Mel.

Have to say all my HYW/WOTR and Sengoko are finished and will not be travelling down the Crusades route. Although I did in 25mm many eons ago.

There are quite a few shield and flag transfers available in 15mm which should help.

Please keep us posted on progress.

Wow those look great. It's my brush skills or the lack of them which is a problem. Just painting a thin consistent straight line seems a challenge for me. :(

I know practice is the answer but I am not the most talented painter <cough> but it's me zen. One reason I like dark ages/hordes of peasants is it's easier to do en mass. :)

In the end they will be ok I'm sure...

P.S I have both Japanese and WotR stuff in the painting queue so I guess this will not change any time soon.

A very basic trick with painting lines - paint the coloured line you want without worrying too much about the edges. Go over it either side with the background colour just concentrating on the boundary between the two. That way you can correct the first line without too much trouble and make it nice and neat... Same principle goes for quarters, chequy and lozengy...

Pinky and Perky are, however, a completely different kettle of ducks.
