Title: Debriefing of a battle : 1st Bull Run (not 100% PP figures, but plenty of them!)
Post by: Anatoli on September 11, 2021, 09:20:49 PM
Hi...

Here is the debriefing of an ACW game (« De Chair et de Sang ») we played this afternoon ; the rules have been written by Pierre.

Here is a link to download them (in french) :

https://reglesvv.monsite-orange.fr/file/b005f001515e958f4f6a90e87dccfebb.pdf

The scenario played was « The First Bull Run » (or « First Manassas »).

The battle took place in 3 phases.

Phase 1

The Union troops launched violent attacks which harshly mistreated the Confederate forces, which held on despite heavy losses.

Heavy fightings took place on the left side and especially in the center area of the battlefield. The Confederates eventually lost these sectors but counter attacked with weakened forces in an attempt to push back the new occupants.

Phase 2

The offensive led by Union troops is stalling. Poor fights, complicated initiative cause them to retreat and momentarily abandon the left side of the battlefield.

Same situation in the center area where Union troops are out of breath ; they prefer to disengage some units from battle in order to reorganize them before organizing a counter-attack in better conditions.

Union cavalry, which had maneuvered from the start of the battle in order to occupy the left flank, was wiped out by the Confederate cavalry sent to counter the threat. This area in now in hands of the confederate army.

The situation is very tense for the Union forces who desperately need some reinforcements. These will take 5 turns before they could join the game ...

Both general (USA / CSA) were killed in this phase of the game...

Phase 3

Reinforcements have just arrived for the Union which counter attack in the center and in the left areas with newly reorganized troops. The game finished by a draw.

On the right side, nearly no action took place; both troops in place remained on the defensive.

We had a great fun in playing this game. The system is really fluent and rules are easy to learn.

It took 3 hours before the game ends after 10 game turns.

Cheers,

Xavier  ;)

Agree with Julian. There is a certain something about how you present your games that is very attractive to the eye. Bravo!

Like Julian I am also making 2 armies for CWB (very slowly I'm afraid). Will be looking closely at the piccies for inspiration.

Great stuff guys

Well done Pierre and Xavier - a beautiful looking game, and it sounds as though you had a blast.

Thank you for taking the time to write this all up and share with us here.

Thank you for your very kind comments...

This battle was really interesting to play. It was a well balanced one.
the initiative system means that players often have to make difficult decisions. This leads to very tense moments in the game : you would like to move 4 units, but have points to move only 2 ! But you really need to move 4 !!!!   :'( ;D ;D

As you guessed, we had a great fun playing it...

Confederate army and 20% of the Union troops have been painted by Pierre.

Cheers,

Xavier

Beautiful painting and terrain. I love the way you have shown specific building landmarks on the table. It gives it the atmosphere of a specific refight, rather than just another game.

Nice one Derek.

Now i got roads and rivers from Fat frank i will be soon starting to understand the CWB rules. i have slowly been building the armies all this year. im really excited about getting stuck into the game. Martin demonstrated CWB to my son and i at a Salute from memory, must have been @ 2009 ? we both really enjoyed it and its been in my mind to play it ever since.

Derek, i have also thought of an idea to help with your AK solo gaming before we meet up to have a battle or two. Next time you have a vertical solo game,  i could act as the opponent remotely by telling you what / where i want the units to do/go. you simply post a photo of the map at the start of each turn and i then say what i want to do with the units for that turn. You then carry out all the mechanics for the turn , then update for the start of the next turn. This way you could remedy the problem of the stalemate you are hitting by @ turn 3 which is generally when most of the units are engaging.  Hows that sound to you ?

:)

Julian

Sounds good to me Julian. Maybe do it by whatsapp, zoom or suchlike. Away from Tuesday early back Saterday so maybe give it a shot next week. May have to grid the playing area a bit more to give perspective of distance.

May even have to come up with some rules for playing at a distance.
