Title: How big is yours?
Post by: Sean Clark on August 20, 2021, 08:59:10 AM
Stop sniggering at the back, Jones. This is a serious discussion.

I'm returning from a short break today, and looking forward to getting back to painting. These few days away have had me contemplating my painting priorities, and just how many unpainted figures I have.

So, let's see how big yours is.

1. How many painted figures do you own? If you don't know the exact number, then give us an estimate.
2. How many unpainted figures do you own?

If your maths is upto it, what is the ratio?

Once home, I'll post mine 😊

For thr record, I am aware Stewart Meecham is a gamer unlike any other I know. Just before he posts his answer 😅😂

And this isn't a 'mines bigger than yours' post. Just curiosity.

That's a tough one. Guesstimate is 1:1, about 3000 in each case.

Great question. I've never considered total number of painted figures before.
I've just counted up boxes/trays for storing finished forces. Just over 50. Each box on average holds 50  to 60 bases. Most bases are 3 figures. So I reckon somewhere between 8000 and 10,000 painted figures.

Any unpainted figures I own tend to be in groups.
i.e a whole unit or whole army.
I do not have a "set up" painting desk. Therefore, I have to make an effort to get it all out and take over the family table.
My painting projects only ever last two days maximum. Usually one day with help from the radiator.

Probably a ratio of around 1:5 unpainted to painted. As for numbers life is too short to count.

I  don't  have any unpainted figures but i do have 7 Pirate buildings and an AK47 compound scenery piece that i am building unpainted.

Painted i have 16 PBI armies and at least 2 armies for all the other PP rule sets so about 10,000 + 15mm, 1500+ 28mm and about 2000 6mm
along with numerous buildings and vehicles

I sadly have many more unpainted than painted figures.

I like to buy things when they tickle my fancy and while I have the money. I unfortunately always overestimate my ability to get things done, but am gradually getting better in both speed of painting and seeing projects through to completion.

Pretty small collection of PP stuff for me, just my WotR and Ak47 stuff at the moment.

As for other stuff, being a Mantic fanboy i have quite a bit 😊, 16 fully painted Kings of War army (6 unpainted), every Deadzone (all painted)and Dreadball (half painted)team plus stuff for The Walking Dead and Mars Attacks( about 40% painted).

Also in 28mm I have large Carthage, Celts, Vikings and Welsh ( 95% painted, just got to finish those Taffies 😉).

And then there's 6 & 2mm 😊 large armies for ACW, ECW,Colonial, WW2 and Napoleonic's ( about 85% painted)

I think that's about it but there might be the odd skirmish game I'm missing 🤷‍♂️😉, how many models 🤷‍♂️ I'm to scared to count plus if the Mrs should find out 😬😊🤦‍♂️😂.

Approx. 15k all in Probably 1:1 painted and partially painted/unpainted...
Like Martin I don't have a permanent set up. Most of my collections are squirreled away in tins and storage boxes... I estimate about 1k of which are PP which dominate the eC20 periods

15mm
~3-400 MexRev - predominantly PP (and growing!)
~500 RCW & Chinese Warlord (Mongolia & C Asia) - mostly PP with a smattering of Irregular, Minifigs & QRF/Freikorps
~200 British (MallMiss & Transcaspians) - Mostly PP & Irregular
~500 Qajar Persians, LC18 Maratha brigades and Late C18 Indians - Minifigs, Freikorps
~200 late C13 Medieval Spanish and French - Minifigs, Gladiator & Irregular
~200 or so 15mm Napoleonic British (Egyptian expedition 1807) - AB, Minifigs
~4-500 Anglo-Normans - Donnington & Minifigs
~500 Sengoku Jidai japanese - predominantly TwoDragons
~4-500 LC18eC19 Turco-Egyptians, Ottomans and Greek War of Independence and Wahhabi Arabs - AB, Minifigs etc.

25mm
~5k Fantasy ASOIAF - Perry, Warlord, Gripping Beast, Foundry
~5k Fantasy TA Middle Earth - Gripping Beast, Foundry, GW, Mithril and others
2-300 Fantasy - Mostly GW, Ral Partha

1:144th
~100 WW1 aerial

Never counted life is too short.
What do pre-painted unconverted figures count as?
And what about all the bits that are for conversions and head swops?

I agree that life's too short. I guess that I also have a 1 to 5 ratio of painted to unpainted.
Painted 25mm I have about 400 Vikings, 1/3000 scale WW1 ships British and Germans, some Cruel Seas forces and Wings of War WW1 planes.
Painted 15mm FOG Minoans, Greek Successors, Early Imperial Romans, Normans, Nikephorian Byzantines, Crusaders,
PP WotR, 2 AWI armies, 2 ACW armies, 2 WWI armies and PBI 8th Army, Afrika Korps, Greeks, late war British and Germans, Red Berets, Screaming Eagles, FSJ, Russians, GIs and Partisans (on the painting table now). Also western and Hammerin Iron.

A quick estimate is 3000 painted and based, plus 1500 unpainted or unfinished. Not counting vehicles, buildings etc.

I have too much stuff to count in each category.  My pile of lead opportunity in the shed will provide protection for my family when China bombs Australia.

Painted - couple of thousand.

Unpainted - no idea, but a lot more than the above...

My name is Martin and I am a hoarder:

The above is just part, I have no idea how much there is but with my wife's help over 400 lots have been sold on Ebay a large box of surplus plastic kits have been sent to the Models for Heroes charity, model railway items have been donated to the heritage railway where I volunteer, and eight bags of books have been donated to the local charity book shop. I have kept all my Peter Pig miniatures.

Best wishes,
Martin Buck

I have quite a lot of both...

Over 10 years ago I decided to photograph and put on my blog all the models I painted... I usually update it weekly so you can see my output here: https://mellis1644.wordpress.com/  (https://mellis1644.wordpress.com/) I'm not the greatest painter or camera guy but it has kept me going and show all my finished work. I do occasionally put up game reports etc but most of the the time it's completed models.

I have never gone back and taken pics of the stuff I did before really starting the blog... I may do that at some point as I likely want to rebse those anyway.

My guess is I must have 10,000+'s painted - especially if I count 15mm figs individually. If counting 10mm & 6 mm then that figs is low...I have 500+ bases (1 inch square) of 10mm ACW stuff alone. :)

For unpainted... well I likely have the same amount waiting in the wings. I am actually trying to finish some of my started but unfinished projects to just get them off the painting table. But I have a lot of those so may not succeed that well.

My biggest problem is Scenery, I have loads of boxes of it. And I need more ? Jungle and winter I ve yet to do ?
Figures? Most people that know and have been round know of my "Tank" collection? I am building more storage next year to cope and store correctly.
My unpainted collection is as big as most others I think ?
I do have a large collection of 20mm unmade kits which I am selling off, but any money made does go into funding other modelling projects.
Now I ve got my Hobby cabin I only have a certain amount of storage space now, but that's quite big ? But it is for both made and unmade projects and all the other stuff we need and collect ?
These pictures are only to show roughly what I have ?

Painted figures I own-----------approx 30,000 15mm------------20 28mm---------100,000 2mm
Unpainted about 600 15mm and 10 28mm-ECW skirmish rules.

I have just re-started my 15mm Cossacks from last year but then found 200 Samurai from PP that need doing and then found a few hundred Swiss--but have no interest in them.

I am more painter than gamer

Grief - how much does The Really Useful Box company rely on wargamers?

And that isn't even all of them and more are on order as well  :o

I have around that number. I read somewhere that 'lead rot' is a chemical reaction between lead and fumes given off by wood and therefore by implication, cardboard, so (if true) the inert qualities of the plastic box are just another tick for the RUB.

Dammit, Just found another load of unpainted HYW French Mercenary units. Will adjust my figure above now.

Well, In the few days since my last post on this topic I have done 24 HYW French---about 100 ECW and nearly finished replacing my pikes from plastic to metal on all my ECW----Still to go, around 100 Samurai arquebusers---still have 300 mounted Cossacks to go. Reduced my mountain of unpainted by giving my mates son a full French TYW army from New Testudo--Now Khurosan was his joint birthday and Xmas gift.

When I get this lot finished I may go to pieces of eight---Rules on the way. the ships look like an easy paint. And I really like Pirates!!! One of which will surely be Captian Pugwash aboard the "Black Pig"  Rest will be taken from the series "Black sails" which I thought was amazingly good.

I have relented and made a 4ft x 3ft grid table and have a full grid mat coming for my big table---The jury is still out on this---Have to see if I can adjust rules for grid tables to big tables, I like games that take a long time.-------------------More to follow.

Since I last posted I have started painting 24 ECW figures.

100 Samurai arquebusers and 40 ECW casualty markers (warbase) finished. Found another 100 HYW French allies.

Still have this daunting task of 100s of Cossack cavalry.

Now bagged separately 6 ECW battalia for painting, plus some commanded shot. Probably use those in 2 base units.
