Just out of interest, Sarissa have released a couple of 15mm ACW ironclad kits, which could add a bit of colour to 15mm ACW games, eg a ship bombardment to assist troops ashore or bombard that 15mm fort lurking in the attic.
I'll check this out. I've always fancied having one on table, either in port or being used for bombardment purposes.
I wonder, if they make anymore, how big a table is need to play Hammerin Iron?!
Admit it gents, you just like that opening scene from 'Sahara' where the CSS Texas escapes under fire...
Ah yes Sahara.
Great fun
martin :)
One of the wooden ships would be as good, Lexington or Tyler ?
But great to see they have made a big extension to their Mid west range ?

Half the fun of ironclads is the simpler shapes which are easier to model the overall structure and then add little details. I recall when riverine games first became popular the 'whittlers' came out to create bespoke models in balsa etc.
The Aeronef fraternity seem to have this taped with a good balance between interesting hull shape and accessories...
The Sarissa models imho seem a little too simplistic, compared to say the WW1 Steam Pinnace or the model gunboat for Patrols of the Sudan. Presumably for a shore action you'd want to model one gun ports open etc...
It's a start, which may lead to better (or stranger?) things. Re. Sahara, the opening was so good I just wish someone would make a riverine Civil War film. There is so much scope for the Vicksburg area and the James river, not to mention the palava on the Red River.
The end of Sahara would also make great AK-47 game as well...🤔
Something akin to a cross between 'The Yangste Incident' and 'The Sand Pebbles' would also make a decent scenario...
I was thinking that 'Sahara' might make a good AK47 scenario too but the Warlord army would need substantially more practice on the range to be at all threatening... ::)
A guy at the wargames club converted a couple of the Airfix "Classic Ships" one was the Great Western paddle steamer into 15mm ACW ships. They might be worth looking at.
Best wishes,
Martin Buck
I have a little paddle steamer I've been intending to convert to a table top model for ages. Trouble is painting armies and land scenic items always seems to get in the way.
Do what I did, Andy, invest the time in a specific water-based project to completion.
PP have some excellent Naval figures from the Pirates and Sudan period that would do at a pinch...
