Title: Hammer'in Iron combined battle: Battle for Battery Rivers Bend
Post by: Commander Klank on July 24, 2021, 05:07:30 AM
Game is set up for tomorrow; Union attack on Confederate gun battery on a rivers bend. We'll be using the ground force rules for the first time with a mod for using hex based play instead of squares.

The ship points are balanced out to within a few hundred points: it's a turret vs casemate ram battle. The land forces are more an experiment as the Confederates are defending a wooded hill against a federal ground assault. Here are the forces...

Union Forces... with 3 divisions

Confederate forces... with 1 and a half divisions

Here is the land battle set up area. flags mark Union start and victory hexes (start as Confederate occupied)

Infantry is Peter Pig infantry figures... the paint jobs are quick dry brush and wash for now. I pint more detail to artillery and stuff later. The two Union half division are Iron Brigade (called Black Hats by rebels and will be a veteran unit) and red legged Zouaves. Two brigades in the other division are Irish Brigade... (green flags). The Confederate half division (gray) are Stonewall's Virginians (veteran unit). We are going to play with the rules a bit and make it so a veteran unit can re-roll one of the 2 D6 that is initially rolled for an attack? We'll see how that works out...

Yankees... 3 divisions worth

Rebels... 1 1/2 divisions worth

teaser... Federal 6 canon battery (based on real gun count for a Union civil war cannon battery) WIP... 6 guns made from chopped up Peter Pig stuff. Might play the as 3 inch rifled unit... range 6 hexes, light gun but is only -1 dice per gun instead of 2 for light guns. As a gun target it would save as a tinclad, 25 points every crit hit is a destroyed gun. We'll see...

Here's the 6 cannon (rifled) battery painted up in Union colors. Experimental rules are in the rules extension thread. A little research showed a lot gun carriages and their ammunition casons on both sides were painted a gray green color... field gray matches that color almost perfectly. Barrels on 25 pounder smoothbore cannons were brass colored or black. Rifled barrels were always black so I painted these barrels black.

Wonderful stuff. I have the old supplement but have never used it. I should rectify this.

Well, I have lots of ships, painted up 3mm armies, so next I need to get a hex cloth, preferably blue one side, green the other. Will check out what Deep Cut have.

I made mine using a hex template. It turned out good enough. I have a 4 X 6 green felt mat I'm going to hex up for land battles. We need to convert the land supplement rules to hexs just like the Hammerin Iron game... makes sense if you think about it. If we game test the land rules and refine them a bit maybe in the future they can be added as an advanced rules supplement to the Hammer'in Iron rules book. A version 3.2 if you will :D
