Title: Mounted command
Post by: martin goddard on June 08, 2021, 08:38:04 AM
Hello. martin here
I am going to make Mexican command base.
4x4 base with rear flash.
I will use the new ACW empty horses and some Sombrero higher command.

That sounds like an excellent idea, Martin.
Since I'm already using the Western horse holders for MexRev I've been eyeing up the potential of the new ACW versions. I look forward to seeing how it turns out!

Great idea to mix in a couple of packs to make a unique command stand.  Looking forward to see the result.

Power to your bush, Martin!

Indeed Simon.
I was going to put a cross on the base rather than a bush.

Whoops!

Although (trying rapidly to recover from my earlier typo...), bushes can be useful to identify command bases (particularly where they are a similar size to the rank and file).

It's quite hard to pain with a bush though - I suggest you try a nice sable brush for that, Martin :)

Oh dear Simon! Pain with a Bush. I'm guessing it's somewhat thorny!

😅😂🤣

I should just give up - clearly a prickly subject...

I will do the base and then trim it.
That would seem to work?
At least Simon didn't say fa***on :)

You're right, Martin - I can't spell fashion either.

To trim, clip or prune - that is perhaps the question...

Although on the topic of spelling, no-one seems to have spotted that the mooted changes for a certain popular set of WW1 rules are all about square basing ;)

Square Basing is the future!
Title: martin's progress
Post by: martin goddard on June 08, 2021, 10:23:53 PM
My command group build is about 60% done.
I have squeezed 8 figures onto the 4x4 command base.
4 empty horses and 4 men.
The 4 men are the general, flag bearer and two horse holders.

I finished the paint quickly so that I could use the piece in tonights FM game.
The general did very well and scored a goodly amount of 6s.

I have used a  lot of dry brushing and inks.
My eyesight is poor so these techniques make up for it.
i will have the photos done and base finished by end of this week.

My problem is getting the base texture in amongst those 24 legs.

I look forward to seeing the result! Having 24 little legs to negotiate is no mean feat!

I dislike basing multiple figures on one base I a!ways end up with some base showing and a lump or smear of texture on at least one figure.

Martin you're braver man than I tackling eight figures on the one base.

Good luck and best wishes,
Martin Buck

Do you mean "mean feet", Sean?  ;D

I calculate that the mean (average) feet per figure is 3. Which certainly is a challenge.

Prepare to be mildly impressed, a bit.

Here is what I did.

Subject is a dorado (golden ones) general. They are called golden ones as  their attire is light tan/gold.

Used empty horse and horse holders from western range.
Standard and  general are from FM range.
Base is 40 x 40 standard general's size.
Flag is from the download on the FM page.

Painted men separately.
Paints are whatever was to hand.
Plenty of drybrushing.
Then lots on Winsor newton inks.  Mainly burnt Sienna (my favourite ink )

Then glued them to plastic base with super glue.
Base effect is TETRION with sand sprinkle.

This piece will be used in my FM games.

Very good, Martin - lots of character in that one base.

I do like the socks on the horses too - so often folk don't bother with such markings.

Love it Martin. You have done the sculptor proud. A base full of character.

I have always enjoyed your painting style. I must get some burnt sienna. It's an ink that suits the subject very well.

I hope he brings you mucha beunna suerte (much good luck).

Thanks all.
He has won every game that he has commanded so far (ie 1).
Burnt Sienna is not a "deep" ink but gives a lovely golden glow to things.

muchos gracias

A very atmospheric base... the painting style evokes the dust and heat of battle  ;D A lovely group.

I like the composition of your command base : when we look at it, we feel that something is going to happen...
Men are ready to move...

Agree with Neil : very atmospheric base.

Superb !
