Definitely voted for a command base.  I need to paint up a Louisiana Tigers Zouave command base and I need to convert the officer, flag bearer and drummer heads.  This will stop me procrastinating and get the job done.

Message for admin. Please can we have a separate "Group Build" board to keep it all together.

Are we sure we need it, though - would a thread per Group Build event be sufficient?

If this turns into an ongoing thing, a think a sideboard of the terrain board isn't a bad idea. Keeps things tidy.

Agreed this needs a new title with the three threads under.

Most forums I know that have group builds have a separate board for them, each group build can have several threads e.g. chat/q&a, wip and finished article.

It's up to you guys really, if hardly anyone participates then it's all academic anyway. I'll have 7 themes left after this one and Simon has suggested "gamette" so we could continue with these for a while.

Please can I have some thoughts around how often we have a group build and how long each one should last.

I think Paul's suggestion for a start date of 1^st June is ok.

I may operate at the slower end of things, but would a couple of months be all right? People need to plan, source and paint their models - possibly after some research into colour schemes and paints. And for many of us, real life / the day job has a horrible habit of scuppering the best-laid plans.

Or - how about this for a thought: we align submission deadlines with those for The Mill? That would be c. every 3 months. Sean could judge content from the Forum; Martin could include whatever pictures he wanted from here in The Mill, but the results would be announced first there? This might make some additional excitement for those both on and off this Forum?

That's not a bad idea Simon... Though me as a judge might need reviewing. Do we need a judge? How about this being a 'just for fun' thing?

Although the forum is ticking along nicely, the amount of regular contributors is still a very small percentage of the membership. Maybe something like this will get the quieter members to participate a bit more in the discussions.

Regardless, I think a command stand is looking like a good bet 😁

Ah - apologies Sean, I had thought someone had volunteered you as Chief Arbiter, but that may well have been in the Pink Pig Award version of things. Maybe we could ask Julie to judge, if we want to make this competitive?

Don't make it competitive.  A group build should just be a fun side project for us to paint things we would not normally paint, or paint something for a army project you are starting or are already half half way through.  And it does not matter if you don't finish the project.  No pressure at all.

A group project should just be a monthly thread where you can post your progress pictures, and admire and encourage the work of others.  Once again no pressure.

And do you really need three months to paint one command stand?  A group challenge should be a single element that's easy to get done.  If you make this too complicated it will die out it within 15 days.

Thanks for the clarifications, Paul - I had misunderstood what a group build is.

It would be helpful to me - and maybe to others unfamiliar with the term - for someone to lay out how we go about this, as it's possible that I'm not the only one never to have come across the group build concept before this discussion?

It may seem pedantic, but a short list of the parameters would be really useful.
Once laid down, the same rules can be used again and again.

My impression is that

a) a theme is chosen
b) a time limit is given
c) Discussion happens during that period.
d) The results are photographed and put in the MILL.
e) There is no result of "best" or 2nd best etc.

Is that about correct?

Perfect Martin.  Exactly right.  The idea is to paint something themed Peter Pig.  Not an army.  Just an a small element.

June's appears to be a command stand.  That's perfect.  You can paint a command stand using Peter Pig figures for what ever rule set or period of history that interests you.

Agreed Martin, although this is Martin B's baby so his thoughts are needed.

See the other thread about maybe a Pink Piggie for each group build entered, turning silver when you've done 5 and gold when you've done 10..

That's all helpful. I think I was partially misled by this all being discussed under "Forum Competitions"  ;)

So, is what we're saying (building on Martin G's clarifications) that:
- we would like a separate Board for 'Group Builds'
- we are actively encouraged to share and discuss our work in progress on that Board during the agreed period (less than 3 months - maybe a month?)
- there is no "here's something I prepared earlier" - the subject has to be worked on during the Group Build period
- we either have a single thread for a given Build, or else individual threads to track a given individual effort (e.g. 'June 2021 - Simon's Mutant Ork Command Stand') and to receive comments / advice / critique - this may be useful to give guidance on to keep things organised, or I may be over-thinking the whole thing...

And Martin G has summarised the individual steps above and as per Simon's post also above I think it would be best if each individual has their own thread to keep things neat.

As things stand at the time of writing it looks like "Command" will top the poll and assuming it does I propose the following rules:

1) Produce one or more command bases for the rules of your choice.
2) All miniatures used must be from Peter Pig (don't have to be current ranges). Additional base "dressing" static grass etc. can be from elsewhere.
3) Models currently work in progress are allowed, completed models are prohibited.
4) Command bases must be completed within the group build time period to earn a "Pink Pig" badge.
5) Completion of five group builds earns the participant a "Silver Pig" badge and ten a "Gold Pig" badge.

Proposed dates: 1^st June to 14^th June 2021.

Please include "Group Build Command" in your build thread title.

Future group builds may have a longer build period if the theme will require more effort or time e.g. scratch building terrain, or if it's peak holiday season.

Thanks for this - it is all becoming clearer now.

I would point out that, for those with children in most UK schools, next week is indeed "peak holiday season", being the first school break in which many of us have been allowed out for months...

In general, and with the vagaries of work, 2 weeks is just too short for me - it would likely become a pressure rather than fun. Any objection to allowing 3 or 4 weeks, or is it just me that is slow?

How many figures are you painting?

I'm happy to extend by a week if that helps you.

My intention is not to close the Group Build on the final day (but if the build isn't completed in time you won't be awarded a "Pink Pig" badge) so you can, and should, post your completed build after the closing date.

The intention is to encourage not pressurise people.

All sounds reasonable. I anticipate that your own build can be as small or large as you wish.

Only have time for 3 figures on a 3cmx3cm base.

Fancy something more ornate? Maybe a general stand, with a car, some loose women and men waving flags 😅

I may well just do a 2-figure base. I find I'm using about 10 colours at the moment. I plan on a little modelling, which might entail some trial and error.

If we can run to 21st June, I will strive for a Pink Pig badge!

I've been pondering how to model a CinC element for my Villistas for a while since I have a number of MexRev factions represented... This is a good incentive to plan and do it. Probably several figures on a 40x40mm base.

I thought all the figures had to be PP. I have 2 mounted characters who are FK15 proxies - a Wurttemberg mounted officer, posing as a 1914 Belgian, and a French hussar posing as a 1914 Belgian Guides messenger. All the other characters are PP Belgian and Russian (head swap) figures.

I would say head swap figures qualify as they are part pig.

Well you've got two FK15s, and as there are no prizes I see little problem, particularly as I need non-active cavalry for this diorama.

Andy you will be fine, no one has written the rules yet. Martin is too busy with FfM.
