Title: Buy me a coffee
Post by: Administrator on May 09, 2021, 09:02:56 AM
The BMAC widget on the screen is a new addition. If you appreciate the work that I do as Admin you can buy me a coffee  - which literally buys me a coffee!

Completely optional - please disregard if you are no so inclined  :)

Thanks
Simon

Well done Simon.

How many cups of coffee a day do you drink?

I was thinking it was some new clickbait widget and spent two hours researching it on the cyber security sites.......

Me too, not quite two hours but long enough to allay my fears.

Best wishes,

Leman,

It basically consists of you donating the price of a coffee shop coffee to the person. It's to assist with the upkeep of the forum.

Just to be super clear - the annual revenue drive we have each year covers the running cost of the site . This is the just the financial outlay needed to host and renew domains etc. This does not include any 'labour' time. To be fair it is voluntary and as long as we cover the costs we are fine. There is a bit of cash in the kitty - but I leave it there for any unknown expense . For instance when we moved server , and when the ISP service changed

'Buy me a coffee' is a tip jar. It buys me a coffee - or sometimes a pack of soldiers. If you think I do good work then it's a way of showing it :-) so not directly related to the running costs per se

Thanks
Simon

Simon,

That's a useful clarification, thanks.

I suspect that many if not all of us don't actually know or understand all the application / infrastructure work that goes on behind the scenes. Even those of us with Admin rights here only see the "front end", as opposed to the plumbing and wiring that sits behind it.

Until the site goes down for some reason or other, in which case it's obviously your fault  ;D

As a rough breakdown costs for running the site break down into 2 categories

Domains renewal - this is a annual charge of ~£12+VAT per year that is pretty stable
Hosting charge - this is a little more wooly. I have several hosting packages with hosting.net. Each package has a number of subdomains and Databases. RFCM has one of each. If RFCM was stand alone that would be ~£150+VAT per year. However, I can slot RFCM into free spaces that I have in existing packages. Sometimes it has to move (as we did a year or so back) because another paying client wants the 'slot'

I generally aim for about £100 per year for RFCM costs - which just pays to keep the lights on and discs spinning.

thanks
Simon

As summer slowly closes, I come back to painting figures. I dont have a clue how to buy somebody a coffee.

But I do know you drink it with Armagnac!!!
