Title: Periscope
Post by: martin goddard on April 29, 2021, 07:55:59 AM
Anyone have any experience with using an upside down periscope in order to get a troops eye view?

i.e You are higher than the tabletop but the periscope lower end is at table level.

I remember reading about them but was too unskilled to ever make one!
Presumably you can buy them now....

I would have thought you would really need to model all the little folds in the ground for it to work well; it would reduce the helicopter view slightly......

Never bothered as it seems like another of those "lets try for ultra realism" trends, which is not really necessary as we are playing a game and not working out tactics for the Prussian military. Also the ultra realism approach inevitably slows the game down.

I can see that they might be interesting for online Covd-safe gaming with a twist, but I would personally push toy soldiers across a table.

My friend has one.  The novelty of using it wore off pretty quick 😀

With the advent of digital gimmickry this could be done with a small camera lens or even just holding your phone camera at troop level. What fun!
