Title: Painting Nationalists
Post by: Andoreth on July 06, 2020, 11:23:03 PM
So far my Nationalist forces have come  from the Army of Africa but I am now starting on regular Nationalist forces and I would like to know what colour, preferably Valleho, people are using for Nationalist uniforms

Can't remember the colour, but I used a greeny green. Might be flat green. Washed with agrax earthshade it came out quite nice.

When I did mine I mixed a touch of khaki into Olive Green. Happy with that but main thing as you'll know was to make sure it looked different from the distinctive Tercio uniform. When I painted my Civil Guard I mixed the colour to match the modern uniform.

Hello,
There's a guide to download from the Minairons site. This guide recommends three colours: recommended on the figure box 70-922 Uniform Green, authors choice 70-823 Luftwaffe Camouflage Green and as an alternative to add some variety 70-924 Russian Uniform WW2.

Don't get too hung up on the exact colour, the shade varies between dye batches and we need lighter shades on our small figures. I used to colour match in a textile manufacturer and the acceptable colour range was quite wide.

On the Minairons there are guides for all the major factions of the SCW and they are worth looking at. The website is currently closed, or I failed to get to the downloads section using a google search or the links on this forum.

Best wishes,
Martin Buck

I would like to recommend the "Painting War" SCW guide, published by breakingwar.com:

http://breakingwar.com/store/es/paintingwar-english/246-paintingwar-5-english-edition.html

I have yet to start painting my own SCW forces but find this book - and the author's results - quite inspirational.

Most usefully, he provides Vallejo numbers for everything.

For Nationalist ("Rebel") troops he recommends:
- shadows in Chocolate Brown 70872
- base colour of 50:50 mix of Russian Uniform WWII 70924: Uniform Green 70922
- highlights by mixing Ivory 70918 with Uniform Green 70922

Legionnaires are:
- shadows 50:50 Uniform Green and black
- base coat 70922
- highlights 70336 Afrika Korps Tank Crew with Ivory

All of which seem to tie in nicely with Minairon's own colour guides.

Simon

Wow that's an interesting set of nice magazines. Were they monthly or something ?
I have a few of the Painting war guides. They are very useful.

I think Les or Stewart has a copy of that too.
Have you used it Les?  Comments.

Yes a great source for the period. Lots of basic information with vallejo colour numbers.

If you are going to much SCW a good buy.

Hello. I can't believe the fact that nobody has mentioned the painting guide included in the excellent Peter Pig SCW rules. In, of all places,  a Peter Pig forum.
You do have them...don't you? :-)
