Title: Got in first!
Post by: martin goddard on June 02, 2020, 01:04:45 PM
I asked Simon to create a new board.
This is it. Thank you Simon.
Hope this is not too diluting when folk are looking for posts?  Opinions?

I am guessing that there will be a fair bit of discussion about figures, rules and the like (or possibly not)?

The first figures will be out at start of August, which is relatively soon.
This war is very complicated in terms of who is who but less complicated in uniforms. Probably because the same chaps turn out for a variety of leaders.

Although there are bow armed Indians, trains, armoured cars etc., these cannot be part of initial relaeses.
There is also a need for foot and mounted figures.
I do not intend US to be part of the range in the initial stages.

The range is being made in response to  potential enthusiasm.  This is great , but there is a "cost" in terms of things not done.

I think the first release will be focussed on Mexicans  with big hats on foot and on horse (Zapata troops for want of a better name). Armament will include some hand weapons and a big bunch of firearms.

Rules. The figures would be based the same for either Square  Bashing or Western which makes life easy.

I would expect  potential customers to fall into some groupings.  This would affect figure needs , such as casualties, markers etc.

1. I don't need no stinkin' rules . I already got 'em made by myself and Billy.
2. I am going to use an already published set. Despite them not being proper  RFCM.
3. I am using Western/ SB.
4. I want  a conversion for SB/Western.
5. I want  anew set from RFCM.
6. I am going to use the figures  for a non Mexican revolution project.

I know nothing about this period / war other than that Mexicans and the US both appear to have been involved.

Is it likely that Mexicans for this new range could mix well with the PP Western Mexicans, or are they all likely to be uniformed types? Please don't answer if this is a case of "wait and see", Martin!

Thanks Martin for requesting the new sand box...& Simon for creating it.

I think it is a great development & I really look forward to this new range and what ever figures Martin sculpts for it.

It wasn't until my copy if the Blake book showed up that I became aware of just how wide the range of possibilities are. I have seen many of the standard pictures of the period, but am surprised at the range of uniforms & equipment for this period. If you get a chance to look at or browse that book....do so.

Rules.... probably a really good approach as gamers have as many opinions as grains of sand.

I was going to add that having Federal troops in uniforms..well gives us all some one ti shoot at.... but after the last few days I am reminded that Mexican Dictators probably all thought of themselves as (borrowing a current phrase)  a "Law & Order President".

In any case... look forward to the figures and the discussions that will follow.

I would have thought that there would be plenty of opportunity to "borrow" figures from the Western range. My knowledge of the period is quite limited but I get the impression that the various factions had difficulty holding it all together as they each had there own agenda. Let's face it there are many different brands of freedom. If you were a leader of a faction then there was a good chance that you would meet with an unfortunate accident or die eating a lead sandwich.
I am looking forward to the character figures, both the historical ones and the Hollywood ones from such films a Villa Rides, A Fistful of Dynamite, The Dirty Dozen and the Magnificent Seven.
I think, with a bit of luck and a fair wind, this should make Martin's second million.

If we're getting into Hollywood celebs, please don't forget those in the movie 'The Professionals'.
Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Woody Strode.....oh, and Claudia Cardinale......😁

Definitely not going to be a skirmish Hollywood game. :)
I will leave that to the usual fantasy game makers. :)
It will be strictly historical.

Very good choice.

Put me in the category of buying two armies and using either Western or Square Bashing until a full RFCM set is developed. Arriba!

I will be using the Western rules.  While modern artillery and armoured cars were deployed I do not think they were used with anything like the professionalism and integration of troops and tactics that apply under SB. Alan in Canberra

SCW rule set may work better than Western

I shall certainly put two armies together.
I had intended to use SB, but not so sure now as to what would be best. I hadn't considered the SCW ruleset before but I agree that there might be some mileage in that too.

What a great excuse to use the under-exposed SCW rules more, Stewart!

SB seemed to work well too for this period, at the last Square Bashing day.

Good thought Stewart
I had not thought of that.

You could rename the rules "Bayonets and Burritos"

Martin

Les alerted me to this . Needless to say, if I can help in any way, you have only to ask. There is info which didn't make it into the book, including lots of photos I have studied closely for details.

The range will be tempting to, as we want to game the MR in 15mm  - until now it has all been 54mm!

Mike,

Welcome to the Forum!

I see that the blurb on Caliver's website for your eagerly-awaited book (lovely illustrations there too, by the way) notes: "A guide to wargaming the Mexican Revolution is in preparation as a companion volume to this one."

There could be some helpful synergies there?

I have been searching in vain for years for 15mm Mex Rev figures...huzzah!

I will definitely be ordering a couple of armies for this but will probably use AK47 as a basis for rules, mainly because I know and love it well and it would be a very good match, with a few tweaks and new bits added on.

Thanks for biting the bullet Martin. :)

The only thing I've read was 'The Wind that swept Mexico', can't remember the author, some years ago and its certainly a chaotic period with supporters and troops changing sides / realigning as new alliances form so I don't see any problems about doing so with the figures.  As I recall the scale of the action varied from skirmishes to major battles comparable with some of the bigger ACW engagements. So I guess that quite a lot of the rules would fit.  I've only played the original AK47 but I should think that the ideology would fit well, all the factions had a manifesto, and the srtillery or train would fit into the 'run down but impressive bit of kit' category.  The SCW rules would probably be my second choice.

First thoughts...
As a start I think the Wild West ranges give plenty of figures for basic revolutionary / irregular forces, what's missing are figures with Mausers (the preferred rifle).
There are lots of heads that are useful such as Belgian WW1 shakes, kepis, peaked caps, sombrero as well as some figures wearing them.
Figures in peasant dress, standard cotton uniform, vacquero dress and maybe civilian dress or western dress carrying Mausers will cover most armies. Foot for most with mounted vacquero / western types. 5 to 9 /10 packs will cover basics assuming people are happy to do head swaps and use other ranges (French / Belgian WW1 Hotchkiss mgs, French guns and crew).

Federales peaked cap or kepi, less common shako and topee / pith helmet (mostly artillery), other types sombrero or cowboy hat.
There's a great series of photos showing a unit of Federales with peaked caps, kepis, shakos, the odd greatcoat all in the same unit.

So Martin and Stewart how is the play testing going?

Are you thinking of SCW, Western or SB?

Or have you already ruled these out and starting somewhere else.

Hello Les

No gaming planned yet.
Stewart's idea is to use SCW .

That is where we will start I think.

However, when gaming starts it will be PBI enemy .
