Title: RCW - Bolcheviks (1918 - 1920)
Post by: Anatoli on October 31, 2019, 04:44:38 PM
Hi...  :)

This is my first post on this terrific forum...

I am preparing a bolchevik army (100% Peter Pig) in order to play a RCW Square Bashing campaign with Pierre "Camulogene" in our local club (in Brittany)...

So here are some few pics of my first 7 regiments of regular troops...

I enjoyed painting these figures very much as the sculpting is superb, with many different attitudes !!  :)

I still have a lot of work to do. Next to come will be the command figures...

Welcome to the forum Anatoli. Your RCW armies look superb. I have played a good few games of RCW Square Bashing and also some Russo-Polish War. Very exciting games which gave me an opportunity to win against someone I rarely beat. He hasn't played Square Bashing for a while, but there is another Russophile in the club who is looking to build a Red Army to take on my Whites.

Lovely figures, Anatoli!

Maybe you can share some tips here on your painting technique?

Thank you for your welcoming...  ;)

I use a Brown primer (Citadel or Army painter) and mainly PA or Vallejo products (except for yellow and red colors : I prefer Citadel ones)  ; then for the basing, I always add a little bit of black paint on every basing colors (except for flesh).

After having based my figures, I use 3 different Citadel inks for :
- flesh (Reikland flesh shade),
- uniforms (Seraphim sepia),
- weapons (nuln oil).

I then apply the basic color, without the black to lighten the colors.

I finish with a lot of linings (caps, vests) to highlight the figure...  :)

I like very much this period of History and am glad there are people playing it on this forum... Do you have photos of your whites, Leman ?  ;)

- 1 cavalry regiment ;
- 2 elite regiments (Sotnya and sailors) ;
- 2 regular regiments ;
- 3 machine guns ;
- 4 guns (artillery) ;
- a few other things...  :)

:D :D

Thank you, Colonel...
I just try to work contrasts between a dark base (ie. a kaki colour with a little bit of black added), and 1 or 2 layers of lighting
(ie. same kaki base, but with white added) after having used some ink...
The final result is not very precise, but the effect is not bad on a table at distance viewing...

Cheers...

Xavier,

Thanks for this. What would be really great, if you have the time and energy, would be to do a step-by-step post with photos of your technique? Either in photos here and/or for an article in The Mill?

But I'd hate that to stand in the way of your turning our more great figures :)

Cheers,

Simon

Thank you, Brian...  ;)

Camulogene (Pierre) and I played a RCW Square Bashing game this afternoon in our local club in Liffré (Brittany, France). It was a 500 points game.

- Camulogene played the Polish army (n°47 in army book list) ;
- I played the red army n°42.

The polish army won the game...

Here are some pictures of this game. We had a great fun !!  ;D

My word that is a nice game. Both the figures and the scenery are excpetional. Goes to show that just because you're playing on a studded surface doesn't mean it has to LOOK like it's on a studded surface 😛

I still have the link...

I am afraid you could be disappointed as it lasts... 20 seconds !

The guy paints a space marine and shows different painting technics ... But when I saw it a few years ago, it gave me the idea to try it on 15mm figs. And I think it works...

Watch from 6'20 to 6'40...  ;)

You should easily find better tutos about this technic, but this is the idea...

Hi... :D

As asked by Simon weeks ago, here are some few pics and explanations about my way of painting Peter Pig 15 mm figures.

I grabbed some ideas and technics from many tutorials I found on the web. I mainly use PA / Vallejo products for painting, and sometimes a few Citadel ones too.

So let's start with :

- a regiment of Bolsheviks sailors from Kronstadt;
- another regiment of Trotsky's Armoured Train Crew.

Step 01 – Primer & bases

First, I use an old toothbrush to wash every figures with soap and water.

As they will be used for the Square Bashing rules system, figures are based 3 by 3. I use Prince August « FX » products (sand, FX009) to prepare every base. It gives a lovely ground effect on bases. Once dry, I use an Army Painter primer spray (brown) as shown on the following picture.

Then, I glue some little rocks (coming straight away from my garden...) on bases.  ;D

(https://i87.servimg.com/u/f87/19/91/06/23/0137.jpg)

I then use a Citadel « Steel Drab Legion » colour to paint the bases and a light grey colour for the rocks (see next picture).

(https://i87.servimg.com/u/f87/19/91/06/23/0237.jpg)

I then drybrush bases and rocks with a creamy white colour as shown on the following picture.

(https://i87.servimg.com/u/f87/19/91/06/23/0336.jpg)

Figures are now ready for painting!

Step 02 – Painting the figures

The purpose is basically to cover the whole figure with the main colours (faces, hairs, hands, uniforms, boots, rifles, etc.).

No need to care about shadows, lights... It will be done later, in step 04.

I always start with faces and hands. No need to be accurate, here...

Then, I paint hairs. This time, I try to be as accurate as possible...  ::)

I go on with uniforms, all leather stuffs, and weapons. From there, I systematically add a bit of black paint to every colour I use. It will be useful in order to create a strong contrast when reaching step 04 later on...

(https://i87.servimg.com/u/f87/19/91/06/23/0435.jpg)

As an example, all white trousers are first painted in light grey... I will use diluted white paint to lighten them later on in step 04.

Step 03 – Use of shades

Once main colours are set, I use some Citadel Shades.

- Faces, hands: Reikland fleshshade.
- Leather stuffs: Seraphim Sepia.
- Everything else: Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade.

(https://i87.servimg.com/u/f87/19/91/06/23/0533.jpg)

Step 04 – Layers / Lighting

Now, this is time to lighten the figures. This will be done in two steps with:

- the use of the previous colours, but without black added;
- the use of thin lines to highlight the edges of every figures (hats, caps, high parts of boots, bottom and top of vests, trousers, sleeves of jackets...). The result might be weird from a close watching, but cool at a distance viewing...

As an example, for the sailors, I previously used a combination of dark blue + black (as explained in step 02).

Now, I will only use the dark blue colour alone, lightly diluted, to cover 80% of the uniform.

Important: here, try to avoid applying the lighter colours in the recesses.

From now, contrast will emerge from your figures...  ;)

Once done, I use the same dark blue added to white colour (it will result in a very light blue) in order to draw thin lines as explained at the beginning of step 04. Please note I do not dilute the paints for this lining process.

The following picture shows figures without (1) and with (2) these thin highlights on their red uniforms.

(https://i87.servimg.com/u/f87/19/91/06/23/0632.jpg)

Repeat this procedure for leather stuffs, weapons, etc. until the whole figures are completed.

The next picture shows figures ready, before varnish application...

(https://i87.servimg.com/u/f87/19/91/06/23/0730.jpg)

Step 05 – Varnishes / Filling the bases

I personally use 2 different varnishes.

- First, I apply a Prince August (or Vallejo) gloss varnish with a paintbrush, taking care to remove the excess varnish;
- After 24 hours of drying, I use a matt spray varnish (Testors Dullcote matt varnish) to remove the gloss effect. I think it works well...

Once dry, I add grass, flocks and paint the edges of the bases with a "Steel Drab Legion" colour.

Pictures with grass on bases will come within a few days, when I finish the whole painting...  ;)

Hi...  ;)

Here are the two regiments of reservist infantry I still had to paint, with another machinegun base...

Those guys come from everywhere (factories, farms, docks from the Baltic Sea...) : their equipment is poor, with old rifles, nearly no uniforms...  :)

Here we are...  :)

This project comes now to an end, with the painting of my last cavalry regiment...  :cheers:

As soon we will be able to meet again in our local club, I will continue the RCW campaign started a few month ago with Pierre...

So as written above, here are some pics of the whole army...

As I finished my project, I think I will go back to another one I started 2 years ago : the battle for Normandy, 1944... I am trying to create a battlefield with a village, bocage outside, farms, etc. Maybe I will post photos later...  ;)

Thank you...  ;)

About scenery :

- Houses : 4Ground houses (for 15 mm) ; I still have to work on it (repainting, ...) ;

- Roads : Time Cast (http://www.timecastmodels.co.uk/range_38/38roads.html) ;

- Trees : Heki (tree products for Model Railways) ;

- Walls : home made... I use little stones from my garden to make a wall (stones+ glue). Once ready, I use a liquid silicon for making a mould from this wall. I then use grey plaster to duplicate the wall. After painting, I add some thin clump foliage on it...  ;)  The photo below shows the wall just out from the mould.

Thanks for the information.
With the MDF buildings, try water colour pencils and felt tipped markers. You may find this easier and quicker than actual painting.
You can find brush pens or markers using water or solvent.  The water are best for general colouring and the solvent for details. Water colour pencils have all sorts of uses.
If you want to spray use 'Graffiti' spray paints.

Good luck.

Thank you, Leslie...

I would have never thought about water colour pencils until you mentioned them !!
It seems to be a good idea...  ;)

After you use them don't forget to spray them with some varnish.  When I was at college it was usually hair spray as it was cheap!! I think you could use some PVA diluted in the water to fix the colour.
