Title: Latest Uhtred tale
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on August 18, 2019, 06:48:13 PM
I see that "Sword of Kings" (book 12 in Bernard Cornwell's Uhtred series) is due out on 3rd October!

Thanks Simon
That will be excellent I am sure.
A good set of fights, war tricks and women.  Someone is going to die (but not Uthred)

How old is he now?

An "old man" of about 45...?

Pretty old for those times I think.
I still imagine the main character as Sean Bean. In fact all of Bernard's main characters areSean Bean?

It's the one situation in which Sean Bean cannot die.

O Gosh. He may be contractually obliged to die in all his films.  Maybe we can choose someone else? Maybe an American? Kevin Spacey?  or Brad Pitt?  This would give the series  US appeal.

Probably not Kevin Spacey.

Nah, lets keep it in-house European. The US is very unappealing at the moment.

I agree Sean Beam does seem to fit many of his lead characters well.

Note, Netflix went with someone other than Sean for their TV version of the books. :( They are not that bad - not great but an interesting watch. He was too old for that part though. Maybe if they carry on the series and he ages....

OK what about Vin Diesel (US) or Hugh Laurie?

I think that Daniel Craig will be looking for a new role soon?

Did Netflix take over the series from the BBC? I for once preferred the visual experience to the books.

I enjoyed the TV series, but had a problem with the "fantasy" sword in a shoulder scabbard...

Why let that upset you. After all there were some strange shield shapes and other oddities, but it still worked for me as a good visual yarn. In many ways the characters looked more historical than in the Vikings Saga (where each Saxon kingdom had it's own take on armour, helmets and shield style, whilst the Vikings appeared to have no armour at all - even the leaders lacked a helmet).

Andy, you're no doubt right, but I guess it's the one thing that really looked wrong to me (not  being sufficiently educated to spot all the other errors!). But I did still enjoy the story on TV.

Probably a nod and a wink to Conan, as Uhtred is not an historical figure.
