Title: Posting pictures and videos
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on August 10, 2019, 03:44:15 PM
We've had this discussion in various places (not always the most logical!) on this Forum at various times. However, driven by the imminent demise of TinyPic, I thought it useful to start an enduring thread dedicated to posting images and videos to this Forum.

Rule 1 is: please do not even attempt to post media content directly to this Forum. It won't render well, it will gobble up expensive storage, and it won't work in any case if your files are above a certain size.

Rule 2 is: save your content somewhere else on the web (e.g. PhotoBucket, Imgur, Facebook...) and simply post a link to that material here.

And that's really all there is to it, at a basic level!

Following Simon C's recent post here: https://rulesforcommonman.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1958.msg16899;topicseen#msg16899 (https://rulesforcommonman.uk/smf/index.php?topic=1958.msg16899;topicseen#msg16899) (thanks!) I have just signed up to imgur.com and successfully posted a link [select the "BBCode" option] to an image. You can choose to create an account with Imgur, or not, and it also allows some basic photo-editing of your image (whether you choose to browse to it on your PC, or simply drag-and-drop).

There will no doubt be questions about this whole process, so please do post them here!

Simon

Many problems at the moment as to where to post pictures. I've been posting my pictures on imgur is your site better Simon?

The other problem is that you need to look at the size of your image.
If its several megabytes in size it needs to be reduced in size as even with the new large screen TV's the image will not be viewed at the size saved.

Most of the time an image size in Kb will be good.

Don't forget that Blogger can host pictures too (and you can simply link to them here)

Don't forget that to some of us this is like listening to a conversation in Chinese.

Less - thanks - I have corrected the typos - that's what comes of trying to post this when little people are around at the weekend!

But I think you've got Facebook to work well for you now, Andy, so hopefully all is good now?

Seems to be - first Photobucket started messing about and now Flickr seems to be doing the same.

I guess this is likely to be an ongoing theme, with various hosting sites coming and going over time. Maybe we should just be grateful while things are (at least for the time being) working OK!

After some recent queries about using Imgur to post pictures on this Forum, I've attempted a little step-by-step guide.

I am assuming here that photos have been uploaded to the device (PC or similar) being used to access the Forum, while noting that it's also possible to post photos using a mobile phone app too (but that would be a slightly different set of instructions).

Here goes...:

Upload the chosen picture onto your PC:

Enter "imgur.com" into your internet browser address bar (note that there are typically lots of pictures of cats, but don't let that put you off):

Drag the file of your selected image from your PC into the green "New Post" box on Imgur:

Your image will be posted on Imgur:

Click on the ellipsis (three dots) above the image, and select "Get share links":

Click on the "Copy Link" button adjacent for "BBCode (Forums)":

Type some text and paste the "BBCode (Forums)" link into a new post window on the Forum:

The image will be posted on the Forum:

Click on "Modify" to view the auto-generated image width and height values:

To resize the image, delete the "height=xxx" text, modify the "width=yyy" text:

Press Post and view the resized image:

Click Modify to check the allocated height value (to be proportional to the height width value entered):

I hope this helps - do please let me know if anything is not clear!

Sorry John. Is there anything in particular that's puzzling?  I  tried to make it pretty much click-by-click, but different folk do have different IT set-ups.

May I suggest that when John comes over to me or Miles I show him how it goes?
I find it easier when someone is there to show me and explain.

I would be happy to show John, when it is possible to meet up. My way of using Imgur is slightly different from the process shown. As I do mine from a tablet using an app, but the basic principle is the same.
With mine, as I usually take photos straight off my phone, when it comes to the image height and width. 900 x 675 pixcels. I usually trim it down by a third. (200) 600 x (125) 450 pixcels. This makes my pictures fit more comfortable on the forum page. I usually go through this after I have posted my pictures, I go to the "modify" button as Simon taught me and apply the trimming sequence as above.
If I have trimmed or edited the picture before hand then the pixcels rate changes beforehand, but the principle is the same, the numbers might be different slightly.
This is from my experience of using "imgur" on from my iPad.

I post my pictures to this forum from my discord channel.

If anyone is not using discord, give it a go.  It's where all the wargamers are hanging out now.  You can post vids, chat live, chat old school forum style, and chat live with video.  All free.

hard to comment on Discord without sounding like an old fogey  :o :)

In the real world I have to use a lot of these tools  - Glip, Slack , Discord..  <old mode> each has a place but none really have the structure that  I would look for to use as a repository of any information.  Lack of nested info 'streams' etc  </old mode>

They all just end up being a messy 'chat'  unless you have super discipline.

Discord is great for online gamers who want a stream of text chat and video chat... but is that what you want from RFCM?

On the plus side - it is free...

Think I am unlikely to post pictures again. Very aware that time is running out and every time I try something new on a computer it takes forever and causes massive frustration which at my age I just don't need.

As I run a blog, I just use blogger and link the photos from the posts straight to the Forum/FB/Others.

Right click on the photo - Copy Image Address

On the forum I then click the picture icon and then paste in between the (//) flags

Well there's the problem. No idea what any of that means. Lrarning Chinese appears to be easier so can we please just forget about Leman posting pictures.
