Title: Basing requirements
Post by: Martin Smith on October 08, 2018, 09:16:32 AM
Hi
Please excuse the uninformed nature of my query:-
I have a large bunch of 15mm ECW models, various manufacturers, acquired over a number of decades, the oldest being original strip Minifigs. They're currently based for eg DBx/FoG type games, on 40mm frontage, with foot on 20mm depth, mounted on 30mm depth, artillery on 40mm squares.

Would they be usable 'as is' for RoF? Haven't seen a game in play, so am unaware of how it 'works', with the square/rectangle system. I'm attracted by the 3' x 4' game table size, which fits with my available gaming space.

Do I need to change basing (aaargh!!!), or use movement trays eg ?

TIA

Martin

Hello Martin
Good news is, you do not need to change anything.
A regiment of foote usually ( there are variations) has 3 bases. 2 musket and 1 pike.  They die by the half base, so a few extra half bases, non unit specific, would be useful too.

You put the three bases touching and they are a regiment. A square may contain up to 3 units in it's 6" size.
Your sizes will be just fine.
The reason for the smaller table size is historical, in that the ECW battles did not feature sweeping flank moves. This is mainly due to the small size of the armies. To do lots of outflanking you need a big army with lots of men.

Thanks both Martin G and Stewart.

Weymouth is about a 2 hour trek from here (NE Hants), but 'doable'. Main decider is the work shift roster, yet to be announced for November. I'll keep it in mind, though. Would love to have a go, especially with a few experts to help me along.

Martin Smith

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your choice of rules. There are some videos up on the Peter Pig YouTube channel explaining most of the mechanisms, linked from the Peter Pig website. Any questions just shout up on here. There are some real veterans of the ECW on here including most of the play testers.

Thanks for the welcome, and all the info.!! I'll await my roster with interest.

Just watched all the RoF videos- very helpful (and was then drawn into the Western videos too...😊 ). A very useful resource.

Don't know where you are based but if you do make it down to the weekend at the end of November I am sure we could have enough figures for a game.

Keep us updated as to the possibility of you attending.

I have the same 'DBR' style basing and have not had an issue using them as is.

I use 2 elements as a base - so a base is 40 x 40 for infantry. That works fine. I don't have any 1/2 bases for horses which is a bit of a pain though but have just got over that with marking bases. I have some figs to eventually make half bases though in the future. :)

I also use counters for casualties and that seems to work fine as well.

When games are square based, systems like a lot of PP games are. Basing isn't really an issue. Its distinguishing what that base is from another is the case. Is it a cavalry base ? Is it Pikes? Command? Etc. Or lmg, rifle, smg in more modern times.
There comes a point of space in a square, can i fit 9 bases or 6 ? Say for example. As long as it looks right and everyone knows what they represent are the main things.

Agreed Miles.  Be careful to hide those LMGs within the shot  and not the pike parts of the regiments.

I use 40mm frontage for my ECW stuff, in groups of three bases (except the singly artillery bases). Easily fits into 6" squares, plus PP ends up with more dosh as I have 6 musketeers and up to 12 pike on a base. Looks tasty!

Thanks for the invite. Roster now says I'll be at work, as is often the case on weekends (and will miss Warfayre, Reading, too). Therefore, unable to attend. However, retirement in a couple of years should help with my ability to get to gaming days no end  :)

Regiment of Foote just dropped on the doormat, so I'm a tad closer!

Even events in retirement can disrupt the hobby.

Life. The trails and tribulations of being a model maker and wargammer.
One thing i have learned as you get older the kids grow up etc, and you can have more time available to do your chosen hobby. Hopefully.....
Until the wife has other plans ? We have all been there one way or another ?
