Title: Campaign thoughts
Post by: martin goddard on September 09, 2018, 04:26:01 PM
This is related to "Longships" rules.
How about a series of battles with one side being the Saxons and one side the Vikings.
The Vikings and Saxons are two teams.
Each tme a player uses aViking force and wins he get some for the team and some for himself.
The same would be true for the Saxon team.
Now here are some thoughts.
1. Fights could be battles or raids
2.Players can fight for only one cause. Viking or Saxon.
3. Any Saxon v Saxon or viking v viking fights just re-distribute that causes victory points amongst that players. Thus a viking v viking game would not create any new cause victory points, but might allow one player to gain some of the other's.  Thus re-distributing within the cause.
4. Previous games would only affect future games to a  small degree so that games are not too "tilted". . eg a few extra armoured  bases, maybe a poor quality extra unit or the possibility of abetter number 1 prize.
5.Each cause would have a "king" to whom the lesser nobles report their victories. The king would need to keep a  "battle record" of games played, treasure won, battle leaders names and battle date. These records would need to be kept as a computer file (word , exel or some such that can be saved as pdf so all can read) that can be distributed to any or all.
6. The campaign would end on new years day 2019.
7. The campaign will still work whether just 2 games or twenty games are played.
8. There could be a community chest of gifts that the king could give to his nobles . i.e  list of 20 things that can be given to a requesting player but each can be used only once and only 1 thing used per game. Thus a noble ask if he can have a "King's favour" and is given the "Northern Marches=If you can carry out a raid and find xxx you will get XX ..." "Marcher lords= Extra unit of a leader and 4 unarmored bases". It would be in the King's gift to allot his favours as he sees fit. not too great though.
9. The winning team gets a winning special figure?
10. Saxons might have "hometowns" which can be specific targets or provide enhancements.
11. We can invite all and sundry to take part from anywhere in the world so long as they are using Longships rules(for victory and campaign stability.

This is just a bunch of ideas seeking a potential audience. I think at least 4 people would be need to make it a campaign?  Solo games are fine too so long as the player declares at the game start for whom he fights. This campaign would commemorate the important 1042 anniversary of the assault on Wareham Dorset by vikings.

Of course all the above can be changed to a WESTERN setting but not really to WW2 , WW1 etc.

The spy did say that the king did say
Touch my hair. Touch my Heir, Torch my hair, Don't you dare, torch my mayor, Georgette Heyer, touch me there, torch my lair, another layer......an appalling spy, but methinks he brings important news my King (Tom the deaf)

Very interesting! So like a worldwide campaign? It would encourage lots of games of Longships which is good.

Skellagrim the Hound will fight again. (But who for...?)

Great idea Martin. Dark Ages played in the winter months, tales of great daring told and retold around around the fireside as the dogs sleep and the women bring in more food and ale.......

With a new Bernard Cornwell book cashing in on the success of the Longship wargame rules, the dark winter months will bring a new Dark Age of gaming.

I do enjoy dark ages battles but not raids. Not sure about taking part in a campaign, but would like to play more battle games using the rules.

But if any stuff was needed, figures painting, building a town or scenery etc then I would be happy to do that for you.

Thanks for the replies. Duncan if you help any players out that is kind. battle can be part of it too if you are happy to act as a non-characater opponent to a campaign player.   Mike, Sean and martin seem to be the only three at the moment. Maybe i should publicise it a bit more?  Do you two fancy being "kings" if the idea goes ahead? What would be required, is that you maintain a list of games and results that players submit to you.  In addition you would have "favours" to give out.  Maybe a 2 or 3 month activity, definitely finite. No maximum to the number of games folk submit to you.

Let me know your thoughts chaps.  Maybe we can add a nw category to this RFCM list that only covers such a campaign. Others can of course view it.

This seems like a great idea (although sadly I don't have the wherewithal to play here).

Sounds a bit dodgy playing for the dubious "favours" of the likes of Mike, Sean and Martin, though. Still, times were tough then...

No problem Simon. maybe you can come down here, let me slaughter you twice and then my battle fame will be rewarded! I might approach the elderly chap next door too!

Thank you Martin - that sounds like a very attractive proposition.

I pity the chap next door...

I'd definitely be up for it if I was in UK.

Any potential opponents where you are Mike??  Don't forget that a whole army only needs about 35 bases and the basing size need not matter due to the grid play.

Ys Sean I see the new book is here in October for Audible listeners.
War of the Wolf. Book 11. Do you want to guess any part of the book?
I think he will have a personal challenge with a French officer who molests a woman/child and shoots him? This is after the French officer has been a poor player in some way.

If this starts in the new year then I may be able to get a few games reported from the crowd around here - aka Toronto.

Might have to use some 28's (as there are loads of SAGA players here) but I have in the lead collection a load of 15's to paint up as well (for this game and others)...

Was thinking about this after our chat Martin.

I say let's do it. I'm happy to be one of the Kings. If Mike was the other we could both report games. Maybe a battle day in January to conclude the campaign?
