Before Ben and I start basing ships, has a standard size base been decided upon for each ship size? I know that at one stage Martin spoke of producing something that would allow a name plate for the ship to be clearly seen.
Also how are people making the waves, have seen a number of good ideas.
Advice is welcome please.

I will start by telling you what I do.
Not sure it is the best method, but is easy(?)
Make a piece of thin plastic card (25 thou) 40mm by 15mm. Stick it lengthways with 15mm under the ship back end and 25mm protrusion, the protrusion painted dark blue and upon it written the ship name (don't forget no HMS etc) and two letters such as MW (medium warship) etc.
The ships look great, but then all ideas should work.
That's what i was wondering ? But i think 2/3 mm MDF would be better. There are several people/companies who would laser cut these for us once we have established sizes for the types of ships used ?
For the waves i ve used tiling stuff before, the same stuff we use for the troop bases as you can mold it and smooth it over with your fingers and water to get what you want ? Milliput and greenstuff for the bow waves?
mine are mounted on 1.25 mm thick aluminium sheet.
for size mine are big enough to protect the ship in storage, so a bit wider than the sails and longer the the ship including the bow sprit and a rowing boat behind the model. So for cat warship 10 100mm long and 30mm wide for example. It will also be big enough to have a name on it.

I used tile grout on some recent terrain bases, slightly watered down. By "stippling" with a brush you can get a nice wave crest effect, which you can adjust by the amount of time you let it dry out before the stippling. Could be worth a try for ship bases?
For name plates, the sabot that I have asked warbases to make comes with two name plates, one for the sabot and one for the games table/ship, I intend to use it to mark the hex the ship has left from in case player whises to recount or change direction.
I have used the same thick card oi always use for my bases and what I used to carve my ships from. I have just doubled the thickness as these are being painted blue and not having green stuff to hide any bases. As for size, I have just measured what looked right for the ship, then added a Cm so i have room for the ship's name at the rear. I also write it on the bottom as well as the class of ship etc.
Thanks for the feedback chaps, its appreciated.
Are there any plans to see if Warbases would do a template, to place cannons, crew and sails on?

I have some arriving from Warbases this week that should do the trick, will post pic when here
Sounds interesting Stewart.

I thought we were told it was too early to get Santos made as things could change?
I think Stewart is speculating, but he may have it correct?
I am still using bits of paper. In fact i may never abandon that practice.
Duncan yes you are correct nothing I' decided yet and if the sabots I have bought are not fit for purpose when the came is published I may use them for some thing else.
Only time will tell if I have made a pistake of not. I have bought 12 , (£23 with postage) so about 7 pints in real terms.
Here is my sabot for ship record.
Shows a medium size (medium gun) warship (Pirate) able quality (row boat)
With markers at game start, 3 x gun, 3x sail and 4 x crew
It comes with two name plates, one for the sabot and one for the ship on the game mat.
That's looking very good, Stewart - very tidy and easy to "read".
Like this Stewart, are they going to list them?
Wardy
Looks good Stewart, did anyone use them for last nights game?
Fi only have one so far as a sample, and Dave I would wait until the rules have settled down before committing I just jumped the gun
Looks good Stewart!
Stewart, agree should wait. But I really like the idea, keeps it all quite neat and tidy.
Wardy
Looks very good
So what sizes are we going for on these ships please ???
Are the bases going to be as wide as the sails ?
So the bases can't be any longer than 10 cms ???
I have put some pictures of ship basing, on the pirate ship page on PP website.
I guess the thing is like you say, if the items had not arrived for whatever reason you would not then have an address or tel no, so giving it to you once you have got your product whilst good is kind of a mute point if things don't turn up.
Yes Miles you are correct about the 10cms. I think the best thing to do in the rules, is give suggestions rather than a rule. Problem might be a base that does not allow a second, similarly based ship into the same hex.
In addition wargamers see basing as a very personal thing (?)
Yes remember we are all individuals (I'm not!)
You will need space on the base for the rowing boat towed behind the ship.
