Title: artillery for army force Major Dundee
Post by: alang on July 25, 2018, 03:07:29 AM
The lists allow cavalry/army forces to have 1 only gun or gatling.  Is this a unit requiring a Leader or is it attached to another unit /independent? Looking to make a force based on Major Dundee (cavalry with a "galvanised" confederate unit) and a mountain howitzer to use against Apaches.Regards Alan

I used a Gatling gun at the Western day. Quite affective !!! 10 D6 each time it fired. But can be tricky to move.

Good question. I haven't found this explicitly in the rules, but believe that machine guns and artillery are independent.

Artillery are (by inference in the rule text) not groups, and only groups have leaders.

Martin or someone else may know where there is more explicit text in the rules?

A gun is a game piece rather than a group.
Therefore it does not cause or take morale. It can be in the same square as another group but adds 1 to the base count. Casualties upon the square are shared between the gun and the group (if present). A gun never rolls for action points. It has only two pre-ordained actions. Shoot or move.
Probably best to consider the gun as an enhancement piece, rather than a group in it's own right.

Charlton Heston's gun was very powerful (he liked that!) against those Mexican cavalry. That one might be available on you tube.  In Western the gun is not quite so good!  The only problem with Major Dundee was Richard Harris' shoulder tabs, all wrong. But i must get over it. I must get over it.  Must get over it.....

Thanks Martin. Now that I look more closely the WW1 German uhlans could be convincingly repainted as their final scene French opponents......Alan

Sorry French. Lots of red and nice hats. No match for Chick Heston and Dick Harris (when not drunk)
