Each Force needs an overall Leader, while each Group also has one.

The foot Leaders are also all "characters", to make them different from the masses they are commanding:

For this, I tried something new. Taking a leaf out of Leman's book, I tried the Vallejo pumice basing gel. I found this to be similar to the coloured ones Coat d'Arms used to do (but which always seemed to dry up after a few uses). I have found videos of folk using brushes, but I just slapped it on with a thin lolly pop stick and then poked it around with a cocktail stick.
The base itself is a magnetic (you need to check - only the newer ones are!) 2p coin (cleaned in vinegar, washed, primed, painted Vallejo Iraqi sand and varnished before sticking on the figure).
The pumice was painted Iraqi Sand and dry-brushed Vallejo Ivory.
The static grass is 4Ground 2mm long, applied using my electric flockbox.
The blue bush (I quite like distinguishing leaders with coloured plants) was a "flower tuft" within a mixed pack from Warpainter.
By the way, the figures were block-painted over a light grey primer. The flesh got a flesh wash and then I finished the lot with Army Painter Quickshade strong tone applied with a brush.
Nice job. That base texture looks good because it is low profile. I will catch the scenics man too (maybe not until the Bournemouth show in feb?)

Thanks Martin: I am not a great fan of figures clambering over moonscapes littered with boulders!
The right grade of sand can also work well and give similar results (if you get the PVA / water / sand mix right), and I used this on some of my Western figures too.
