Title: mats
Post by: Leslie BT on June 07, 2018, 08:25:14 PM
Stewart.
What colour blue mat did you order?
Does it have black, white or coloured hexes marked on it.

Are you basing your figures or your ships?

Sounds intriguing!

Presumably this would have been from TinyWargames?

The people want pictures!

The mat colour is actually mid blue with pale blue hexes.
I bought about 200 painted pirates from hinds figures and I am rebaseing them.
I have 5 Pirate bands of about 40 figures and 3 cannon and a town/civey group of about 40 figures .
I expect I will sell at least 3 of the Pirate groups.
All passed on 2p's , dead 1p's , cannon on 30x30 sq

Thanks, Stewart - that's helpful, and a nice-looking mat. Those hexes don't look too intrusive.

And lots of Pirates - I'm hoping we won't all need to paint up quite so many!

Are you doing 2 per base?

Will you be doing Militia? I was thinking of using some AWI figures, as they are more modern sculpts than the "official" militia. Any thoughts on that idea?

figures for the old set was 5 for townsfolk, 4 for the army, 3 for regular officers, 2 for pirate captains, governor, priest etc.

But I am sure this will change for the new set.

Simon I have done a variety, Pirate group x 5
Captain      Single figure
1st maitre/quarter master. 2 figures
Pirate with treasure   1 figure x 1
Swivel gun. 2 figures x 3
Musicians. 2 figures x 1
Canon +3 crew x 3
Crew (various wpns) 3 figures x 7

civys
Govener 1 figure x 1
Preast 1 figure x 1
Bodyguard 2 figures x 1
Civys 2 figures x 14

Talking to Martin probably won't need 1/2 of them so on to the bring&buy.
Play testing starts next week.

Simon this is my 3rd sea mat from Tinywargames, they are really very good.

Stewart,

I have a couple of 3' x 5' gridded ones now. Once they got the squares the same size (there were some early quality control issues), these turned out very nicely too.

I need to get myself one for PBI - hence hoping that Miles will do a bulk purchase for the Arnhem game!

Those sea ones look great. I may get one once Martin is really sure he wants to maintain this size of mat and hex for Pirates!

This is a great little game that uses a 3x 2 foot board with a simple grid game system. Good fun on it's own or as part of a Pieces of Eight mini campaign as provided in the mini campaign rules.

6 x Government Musket Bases (36pts). 4 figures per base.
10 x Mob Bases (10pts). 5 figures per base.Defenders Total 160 pts.
Packs: -2(x2), 3, 11(x2), 12 , 13, 14 17, 27(x3), 28, 29(x3).=16 packs

Les - presumably that all may change quite a bit with the new rules...?
Title: Re: mats

Simon is correct.
All those interested have the new figure amounts in their 'hand" so to speak. The new version will use a different amount of figures to the last edition. But that may change too!!

At the distinct risk of splitting hairs, I believe we have the number of bases in the new draft rules, but not the number of figures...?

Any thoughts on whether this is a 2, 3 (or even 5?!) figures per base set, please?

Well I have based 270 Pirates & guns so if I don't use 90% of them then the new rules are not complete

Good question. I am not sure. How about 2-3 for a fighting base ( a normal 3x3 or 2p base)and single for officers (no idea  on base...1p).  that does not hep but I am aware of te dangers of being to fixed too young?

Stewart. That is a big landing party/away team.  Should overcome the port scum easily?

Tell us about your mat. Dimensions in hexes?

So I guess the question is: how have you based yours, Stewart?

I like the 2-3 / base + officers as singles idea - sounds very much as though we're going for a similar feel as in Western? Would mean that those folks who already have forces can use them, while newbies can go for the 2 per 2p coin concept and get up and running faster.

I like lots of figure so as the play test progresses those Pirates that don't measure up end up in the sales line and I am left with a core of successful veteran Pirates.

My mat is a nice blue (like my eyes) with complete  9 x 16 , 6 sided squares 4" side to side.

Getting my mat ordered, thanks to Stewart for negotiating a great discount.

We are still on 5 x 3 with 100 mm hex overlay?

I think it is now on tablets on stone.  4' flat to flat hexes and a 5x3 table. The 5x3 is for convenience. It should fit on most table tops(?). Also 5x3 can reached across whilst sitting. I would not regularly play a game that needed bigger than 6x4 with my current living area status.
The hexes could have been experimented with more but the distances move seem satisfying (?). The shooting looks fine too (?)

I was thinking that the mat should be cut so that only full hexes are present?  Messy but gives clarity.  Orientation is another thought.  Matt commented on this. Maybe the game should flow fro corner to corner instead of end to end .  I like that idea much.

The 1/2 hexes do give more playing area
