I've finally finished varnishing and basing my VC force and accompanying villagers, which had all been languishing in various stages of completeness for way too long. I thought I'd better post something up before they all become obsolete if new VC are included in Martin's Generation 3 plans...

Here's the full VC force of 5, 6-base squads:

The leaders of each have helpfully all found a red bush to stand in front of, which makes distinguishing leader bases from the normal footsoldier bases easier:

All are Peter Pig: I did a number of head-swaps to ring the changes a little.

Here are the innocent bystanders / potential VC recruits in the form of villagers:

I was a little more restrained in my use of Army Painter stains with these, which I think helped a little compared to the armed VC.

Here are the dead markers (both villagers and VC):

There is the old cache marker set (now replaced by a re-worked pack #8) [posted upside-down, as the free hosting site TinyPic sometimes likes to do...]:

and I had some spare figures I based individually as ambush markers (although we now have the purpose-made pack 57 for this):

Great work Simon. Mine were all painted some years ago but I do have the NVA (also about to be replaced I think) on the painting table.

Your basing is really nice too and I like the idea of the red clump foliage/flowers to identify the leader bases. Well done.

Thank you Sean. I had also started on NVA, but fortunately [as I think Martin has said that these are the first to be replaced] some cowboys came along to distract me before I got too far into them...

Does Martin have a part-exchange policy for old lead...?

Ha! Unlikely on the exchange. I'm happy with mine and may just sell the old ones when the new ones arrive. Or just play with the ones I have. Or supplement what I have with a couple of new packs. The old sculpts are 25 years old and stand the test of time. Painting SCW today though!

I did.mean to ask what skin colour have you used? It looks suitably Asian and I may nick it for the relaunch of my Samurai armies.

Also what colour have you used on the base?

And finally...when do we get to see your white star forces?!

Sean,

I'm not big on imagination, so the skin is painted in... ... Coat d'Arms #215 "Oriental Flesh". I believe that Vallejo also do an Oriental Flesh colour, which is probably not too dissimilar. I used quite a sparing coat of Army Painter Strong Tone and managed to avoid any waxiness when I put matt varnish on top.

The bases are painted in Howard Hues 4143 GeoHex Brown [I like these bigger pots for basing - cheaper than dropper bottles even if they don't cover as well as Vallejo or Coat d'Arms], dry-brushed Vallejo 70819 Iraqi Sand. I now mix my basing paint with PVA glue and water, and then sprinkle sand and small gravel on top: this makes sure there is colour throughout (chips are not so noticeable) and it saves painting afterwards. I use one of Les's top tips and spray water (I have a little vaporiser spray from a pound shop) on the sand once it has nominally dried, to help stick down any loose bits.

And finally... I have a dirty little secret regarding the White Star forces, which I will shamefully share once I take some picture to post up here - hopefully this weekend.

Cache markers and all the other figures. Whats happened to the ambush markers for the cache loop.

Like Sean the bases look great and really make the units.

Simon.

Take a little sample of your Howard Hues 4143 GeoHex Brown to the DIY store and get them to scan the colour and then get them to produce a pot of emulsion in the same colour. Relatively cheap and great covering density.

You went and spent money to spray your water, I'm touched.

Doesn't your household use the anti-bac type cleaners that come in a sprayer?

Les, I am touched by your concern, but I already had the sprayer, bought long ago on the basis that it would probably come in handy for something someday...

I was just delighted that your tip gave me both a legitimate and very useful role for it!
