Ancients at Historicon
« on: July 18, 2017, 03:06:26 PM »
Just thought i would write down  a few observations of ancient wargames at Historicon.  Historicon might not be a good insight into the US "scene" , but none the less interesting.
1. A big section of games using a DBA variant called "triumph". Seemed very popular.
2. A 54mm hex based game  using "command an colours" rules.
3. A massive 25mm ancient games. Not sure what rules were used. Probably Germans v Romans? Too dark to see.
4. A competition using "warrior/WRG 7th" rules.   All in 25mm
In summary, ancients is being played, but mostly in competition format.

Sounds to me that it is a conservative scene

Yes a little like UK 12 years ago. No FOG but I think they had an ADLG tournament

Interesting how most ancients sets are broadly split between WRG basing (FOGA, ADLG, Sword and Spear, MEG - 4cm frontage etc) and Warhammer (Swordpoint, War and Conquest, Hail Caesar 2cm frontage per figure). Ancients still seem very popular with most gamers having there figure bases for the above rules it would be brave rule writer to produce a set of rules with a completely different basing system. Ancients is also the most popular numbers wise on the competition circuit.

Being indecisive I have ancients based for both sets in both 15 and 28mm - sometimes two armies one in 15mm and one in 28mm, not very wise.

Mine are based for Impetus - nothing like WRG or DB burble, both of which are about as interesting as watching paint dry.
