Pedants
« on: April 27, 2017, 09:11:23 PM »
One thing that does tire me out is people who nit pick over the smallest issue with a ruleset, pointing out what they percieve to be a major flaw. They usually make a sweeping comment without clarifying that is their opinion and they tend not to accept any counter argument to the contrary. These same people don't seem to write or publish their own rules, just criticise other peoples efforts.

Agreed, for that type the direction is clear if you don't like the rules don't bore me about why you think is wrong with them, write your own set, or rod off and play something else, preferably not with me.

That's one reason I started the games weekend. Sometime the rules become crystal clear if you play them with the author or the play test team.

Some people are doomed to be unpopular opponents?

Yes we have all come across them. I do try to be inclusive and welcoming but attitude is very important. As I get older I find I'm more choosy with who I  spend my leisure time with

Yep I know a few also.
I also know a few who are all fired up with a new period and encourage a group to get involved, set a date for the new game and then fail to turn up with their agreed stuff!

I really don't mind pedants because I am a bit over pedantic myself at times...Ask martin about a request for an engine block and an exhaust!...

It is probably a professional thing to be careful....and having a job that analyses stuff means your genie is out that bottle forever in terms of accepting stuff at face value.

I am probably most pedantic about getting the games to feel right and the people I play with to enjoy the experience.

Yes , I want to have some social time with my mates and play good games and play on tables with fantastic looking terrain and have representative historical forces and a competitive edge for the craic.   The thing that does really matter, the bit that "grinds my gears" is that I get an understanding of what the combat problems actually were in the period.  How the protagonists interact and how and why tactics and formations succeeded or didn't is important....just not to the point of bullet counting and trigonometry for every pistol round.

If dumb luck decides more games than tactics, then that is an issue unless tactics in the period were to adopt the process of leaving it to luck !  Looking forward to rejoining some action in the wild west!

I suppose it would be really pedantic to flag up ‘with whom I spend my leisure time.'

[pedantry on] Would now be a good time to point out the root directory for this forum is "RCFM" and not "RFCM"?

Any time is a good time. Sadly [from a pedant perspective], I spotted this some months ago (but didn't dare 'fess up here). I did check with Mr Lurkio, but it's probably not going to be changed though.

Leman...

No offence taken at all! 😀 it's just the sort of thing I notice in other people's posts. I'm known at work as a stickler for good grammar. He who lives by the a word and all that 😂🤣😂
