That's it Simon. The other thing my mum would say is "we don't have any of that in our family" , but that was usually reserved for unusual practices or tropical diseases.

My mum (when I was about 16) said, “I saw this on sale in Smith’s and thought you might like it.” It was a massive hardback of ACW drawings done to illustrate the newspapers of the time. My dad was also a star, turning up one day with two hardbacks from a Smith’s sale, one on Koniggratz, which I still have, and one on Caporetto, which unfortunately has vanished in the mists of time.

My mum hated anything to do with war, she lived through WW2, and wouldn't buy me anything to do with military modelling or wargaming. The only model kits she bought me were of civilian aircraft or cars. Military models or books I bought myself met with disapproval, railway models were OK, and could be re-purposed when she wasn't looking.

As a kid, my mum said if I liked war that much why did I not join the military. Be careful what you say to kids, as they remember... :)

Although my mum was happy to support my hobby she wouldn’t have anything Japanese in the house.
