King Leopolds Ghost
« on: January 18, 2020, 11:26:54 PM »
A rather good documentary on Netflix. Talks about how Leopold grabbed the Congo for his own personal gain and the rather brutal means he used. He was a master if spin and fake news and only years later the truth came out.

Horrific but important viewing I think.

Thanks for the suggestion, the colonization of Congo was specially brutal but it's mostly not recognized.

I haven’t read it yet, but Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’ is set in the Congo during the Belgian period. ‘Apocalypse Now’ is an adaptation of Conrad’s story.

I have not seen the documentary, but given that it shares the title i assume that it is based on the book "King Leopold's Ghost" by Adam Hochschild. An excellent read.

I have a statue of him in the town square of our scenery for World War 2 games. It uses the free figure of the king given away as the "Famous Belgian" at Crisis in Antwerp a couple of years ago. In today's climate I wonder if i should pull him down, as Martin points out he was not a nice man.

He was not a nice man, but a statue of him is authentic in aWW2 game. In the same manner an "Ein Volk" or "Papa Stalin" are authentic for WW2 games.
