Welcome, come one come all
« on: December 04, 2019, 09:45:41 PM »
Thanks to Simon for setting this up.
It is intended that SSPBI becomes the project for 2020.

Not sure the name will catch on in Germany

Not sure the name will catch on in Germany

Or indeed elsewhere...

I'm assuming that this is a working title, until something more politically correct comes to mind?

Single-Side PBI ("Poor Bloody Infantry") i.e. a collaborative spin on the PBI rules, thus creating our new rules project for next year :)

Yes SSPBI is  working  acronym.   To get web hits I was trying to get bondage, SS ,scrumping and Hitler into it somewhere but not yet.... :) :)

Some initial thoughts.
Stewart has given me an initial bag of ideas. Any others are invited. No guarantee if they will make the final album or not.
The usual idea is that I construct an overall game, then it gets poked about by play testers.
I do not usually ask "how should we do...."  more usually  "This is the idea, what do you think..."
These are basic principles upon which detail will hang.

I do this to guarantee that no mechanism is copied or influenced by any other game.

Morale like SCW.
Motivation like SCW.  This would mean guns etc grouped as pairs.  Radical for WW2 but simplerer.
Scenery like PBI. Set up as opponents before SS decided.
Table 4x4 or 5x3. Probably 4x4 to be like PBI.
Objectives = 11 like PBI.
Countdown  D6 in player turn only.  D6 with re-roll.
Movement, ranges and distances= no diagonals

Opinions?

My humble opinion is that this looks like a good start. SCW motivation is rather simplerer, and simplerer is betterer.

I'd initially thought that SSPBI would be "PBI's little brother", but I think now it might turn out to be PBI's cousin. As such, the same size table makes lots of sense.

4x4 should be fine in terms of compatibility.

The only problem point, is that 4 foot will bring the cloth to the edge of the wooden table. Thus there might be some knock offs and junk intrusion?

Therefore 5x3 will still be in the potential mix.

5x3 on a 6x4 table gives space (6")  all around. Players like to put their junk near to their front; which means "junk" on the playing surface.

Junk= dice, playsheet, cup. Although a 6" strip is not enough for a play sheet.
Maybe we should design a player's play sheet which measures 6" and stretches out horizontally?

Also space will be needed for the stats cards that each unit and vehicle will need for the top trumps rule section. ;)

Can we write into the rules that Pringles and chocolate biscuits are included within the obligatory Junk, please?

5' x 3' actually works better for me, as my dining table isn't 6' x 4' :)

Tell us what your using for each army?
And what the composition of each army is for the play testing.

Not sure Les
Thought we could start with Coy Commander,  3 normal platoons, MMG platoon and a pair of medium tanks (7/7)?
Folk should have an initial copy by first week of Jan?
The challenges are many.  The first consideration/challenge is that the rules will be  a complete set rather than a supplement to PBI.
Second is that many gamers find PBI difficult to understand. :)

I would actually say it is better if we pit our “junk” to one side or the other. Rather than right in front of us. But the 5x3 allows a better flank move.
