SSPBI
« on: October 05, 2019, 09:13:59 AM »
Just to keep the discussion going.
SSPBI should start in January 2020.

I would like it to be related to standard PBI. This will alow chaps to turn up nad choose at that time whether to PBI  or SSPBI.
This might also be too restrictive?

Here are the proposed  "shared " items.
1. 8 square by 8 square table.
2. Similar sized forces (400 points). In the short term infantry only.
3. Ground scale.
4. Action points

Here are some potential "differences".
1. Change of 21 point countdown to similar effect but more player change system.(BB, Vietnam)
2.Motivation,  SCW . Dice for all APs.
3. Victory point system.  All new because the nature of the game has changed.
4. New markers for potential threats

All of this is really just ideas in the air at this point.
The major challenges are to create a rule driven opponent which can react to the players and also behave in a plausible manner. :-\

More to come.

As an aside maybe

1. Name it after an already established name ; "last of the Mohicans"?
2. Introduce some special D6.   As seen in the boer war  ideas.
3. Cards for pseudo amusing happenings e.g "opponent's force all dead"  and "personal challenge"
4.Very expensive (4.50) PP figure (must be that figure) that will achieve mighty things within the game.
5. Like the idea of leaders being Rommel, Monty, Patton, Stalin and Hitler.   Good extra sales.
6.Related range of SS jokes, stickers and shirts.
7. Some objects to throw at the other player's figures. Stimulation of HE and mortar??

So has the idea of force size related to quality been shelved?

Glad to see that thoughts on this are progressing, Martin (aside from the aside, that is...).

The idea of SSPBI (might need to change that title in due course - it could attract the "aside" audience...?) as a wholly compatible introduction to PBI is very welcome. But whether you will need a full PBI-sized force to play SSPBI might be something worth debating?

One new thing to consider could be hidden forces / movement? This might actually be easier with the "programmed" opponent as opposed to a flesh-and-blood one. We were discussing this during the recent Arnhem (PBI) game - the defenders were hidden in the village and hadn't yet fired, but could still be targeted by the attacking Airborne. It would be much easier not to be able to target hidden forces if you didn't even know they were there! Perhaps some kind of "reconnaissance by fire" notion could be introduced to provoke the hidden enemy (maybe with a much lower chance of scoring hits) into firing, after which we're back to normal rules?

Simon

I agree with the hidden force idea, we used this in the Arnhem game with the Para's represented by a union flag token, which was activated by the Germans getting within two squares. On the reverse of the token was written what the unit was, infantry, mg, mortar, recce etc.

But will you still need two armies and a normal set of scenery?

I would like it that way Les, but that might just be for the hidden enemy?

Hello Simon

SameSide PBI.  ie  all players work together against a rule controlled opponent.
