Can you give a quotation by a military commander to inform or amuse us?

"God grant me the courage not to give up what I think is right even though I think it is hopeless."  US Admiral Chester Nimitz.

“Even if I wished to surrender, and I don’t, I am commanding Australians who would cut my throuat if I accepted your terms.”
COL Charles Hore, Commander at the Elands River Post in response to a request from Boer GEN Jacobs Koos de la Rey to surrender.

General John Sedgwick, whose last words were reported to have been "Why are you dodging like this? They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."

Quantity has a quality all of it's own.

The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic.

Martin, I believe your quote was the prayer of Sir Jacob Astley, commander of the Royalist foot at Edgehill. The prayer begins something like:
"Lord, thou knowest how busy I must be this day. If I forget thee, I pray that thou dost not forget me."

Or how about "Nuts" from the commander of Bastogne, although legend has it that the reply was "B*ll*cks" but the US press weren't allowed or preferred not to print that.

Or "Elephants? Over the Alps? 'e's 'having a laugh!" Attributed to an unknown Roman general sometime during the Punic Wars.

“Those that say the pen is mightier than the sword have never encountered automatic weapons”
