The Sudanese in Mexico
« on: May 27, 2018, 04:01:11 PM »
You may or not not be aware that a Sudanese infantry battalion fought for the French during the French intervention in Mexico in the 1860s. Although most of my figures for this war are from the QRF/Freikorps range , the Sudanese are from PPs British Colonial range.

They made their first appearance on the tabletop last week in a scenario that saw them fighting alongside Austrians against Republican Mexicans. An AAR of the battle is on my blog http://twomarshals.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/callejon-de-la-laja-mexico-1865-using.html

Here is a company patrolling the Veracruz to Mexico City railway

That's interesting - certainly a rather alternative mix of troops to what one normally sees.

And a very nice AAR - lots of photos!

Thanks for sharing, shedman.

An interesting take on that period. Are the bulk of the Austrians actually Belgians? The basing method is very similar to one of my regular opponent’s mid-C19th imaginations armies.

No - the Austrians are definitely Austrians - they wore the distinctive Jaeger style hat

The Belgian Legion did start with a similar style hat but dumped it in favour of the kepi

This wonderful painting by Charles Lahalle shows the Belgian Legion in Mexico. Now if only PP did ACW Zouaves in kepi and havelock...
