Title: CWB gaming day
Post by: Smiley Miley 66 on June 03, 2017, 07:56:49 PM
I know this isn't the most popular of gaming systems. But a few of us do enjoy playing the game.
It has been suggested that "could I arrange another gaming day" ??? Nigel ?
So I was thinking towards the end of the year possibly at Entoyment? 2 games and Lunch ?
Any suggestions on dates ?

Miles

I would be interested. I used to really enjoy the old annual CWB day and it ensured my ACW figures got at least an annual outing. Peter Pig gaming weekend is at the end of November so I would suggest leaving it until a few weeks after which would put you into the Christmas period so perhaps January?

As you know Miles I work lots of weekend and don't yet know my weekend pattern from October onwards so can't definitely commit but if I'm not working will attend (even if Bournemouth are playing at home, that's commitment for you).

Entoyment is a great venue, not only do you get to play a couple of games you can also shop (paints, figures books etc).

So I think this is a good idea Miles.

ACW is my favorite period and CWB one of my favorite rules sets. So long as its a not the week before or after the weekender I'd be up for it....woek permitting.

So 2 games, lunch and go home.
So what about 08.00/08.30 Breakfast at the cafe. Shop opens 09.00/09.30 we get in set up and play. Game 1. Break for Lunch. Game 2. Talk, pack up and go home. £5 per head, free tea and coffee.
Need to know any armies that anyone would like to use then maybe we can set up some games ? Example mid war eastern union. Then I can match a confederate opposition.

We had a really good game.  Fred and Miles   v Neale and martin (me).
It took a while to get through the initial stages. As Miles said, we were rusty.
Lots of little bits atht we modifued in firther rules but still apply in CWB

to wit
1. Minimum 1AP des not give minimum 1 action. In subsequent rules it tends to be minimumm of 1 action.
2. Brigades can often fail to get going. See 1 and deduction of 1AP from raw.
3. the losses system at the game start is two stage.  In subsequent rules t is one stage.

None the less a god game was had.
Fred nearly slaughtered an infantry brigade with dismounted cavalry holding a camp. Very close indeed.

Good to hear that you had an enjoyable day out relearning the rules.  It's good to go back and play the older sets and remind ourselves of how they were amended than.

Often the revisions were cutting edge and now we think them normal.

The 1 for  the first shot and 3 ap for the second shot first  came in with Washington's Army I think. The concept of 1 residual ap when your commander failed a motivation was great allowing units to do something....opportunity fire is always free though!

Well I moaned about everyone "washing their hair or taking the dog for a walk?" For the PBI.
I can be there for Breakfast and help set up the first game. I ve got to go for an MRI scan on the Saturday morning now. I can't moan I ve moved the appointment twice now, so I had better take this one. Then I can come back and play the second game of the day... At least Lee now has an Army to fight with !!! Lol

I'm counting the days to my trip south.

I'll bring a tables worth of scenery and 2 armies. I'll bring the blue and the grey dice which seems appropriate!

Not played CWB in a while so really looking forward to it. I'll bring some spare cash to spend in the shop too.

We had a very enjoyable day with Entoyment of Poole hosting the event.
We had 10 players with 4 games am and 4 games pm.
Confederate forces won the day overall with a Total score of 467pts against a feeble Union score of 352pts.
It was fun to see everyoneís  interpretation of the rules as every game had slight variations from the main rule book, obviously sold as guidence only.
Looking forward now to the Weymouth games weekend.

See you all at the Weekender.

You raise my suspicions Mike??

Always good to see you southerners. Made it back to the cold wilds of the North in good time. Planning more ACW now alongside my Western force which I think will be posse/outlaws as we have a few people doing Indians.

Also having picked up my SCW rules ( which are lovely) I need to crack on and paint up 24 buildings.
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on November 05, 2017, 09:47:27 PM
... alongside my Western force which I think will be posse/outlaws as we have a few people doing Indians.

I liked the idea of getting a core "cowboy" force that could be gunmen, morphing into posse or even into cattlemen [3 forces for the price of one, if a little poetic licence is allowed...], with the added advantage that there is such a wide range of usable figures within the Western range.

I followed Martin's tip and did some head-swaps with ECW wide-brimmed hats (pack 52), and also used "broad brimmed hat (Confederate)" (pack 32) to ring the changes further. Both seemed to work very well, and mean that I have no duplicate figures in my mounted force.

I just need to find the time to finish painting them...

I've still not been brave enough to tackle head swaps!
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on November 06, 2017, 06:46:07 AM
I've still not been brave enough to tackle head swaps!

I found a good start was to twist off the first head. You then have a useless figure, so have to do something about it!

There's a thread somewhere on this Forum giving lots of good advice.
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: Leslie BT on November 06, 2017, 06:30:24 PM
Really simple Sean, I try to pick the figures that do not have the head cast with the weapon, hand, arm to close.

With a pair of pliers twist the head off, it is better to twist the head off as it leaves the shoulders level.  With a sharp mapping pin, the one that looks like a dockside bollard, press a centre mark on the centre of the neck.
With the heads sprue cut of the head you are going to use with as least half the pin left on the underside of the head.
Find and fit a 1.5mm drill into your drilling implement. Carefully drill a hole using the centre mark, try the head, if it does not sit down well drill a bit deeper.
The hole wants to be a very slack fit. Put the super glue into the hole and insert the head adjust the position of the head to  suit your requirements.

Stewart i will always try and fit you in, as you organise the weekender for us all. Itís only right I should try and include you as you are a big part of RFCM rules and Games. I think also the CWB normally attracts a more ď localĒ group so another reason to include you, and Nigel as well when possible.

Post by: martin goddard on January 17, 2018, 09:34:12 AM
Just shows that information is power. I had no idea about those two events, they are outside of my  interest but very much items of national importance. I did chat with Miles and assured him that  29th was an excelent date (whoops).  The royal wedding might be an issue if players wanted to watch it or are wanted by partners to watch it.  Personally i am a republican who will not watch it but still wish them well. If the FA cup is the same day they will re-schedule the FA cup (i am prepared to take bets of £5  on that).
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on January 17, 2018, 10:31:04 AM
Martin,

The FA cup final / Royal Wedding are on 19th May. So I think the issue is the timing of the CWB day, rather than the PBI event with which everyone so far seems happy on 29th September?
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: Smiley Miley 66 on January 18, 2018, 05:08:40 AM
Ok what about June ? Any ideas on June ? World cup starts 18th June ? But unlike the FA cup I know it's not essential to watch, as it's repeated over the day.
Yes Entoyment would have moved by then. Going from Parkstone in Poole to Poole Quay ? Will find out more information on that when I visit the shop next week.
So need your input guys please

Well PBI is sorted. 29 th September.
But it's now sorting out CWB. What month would be suitable ? April and October are out. May is looking busy. June maybe the 23rd ? July does have the Western day in the Calendar, so we would be getting our rules mixed up !!! September has PBI same reason, and June is Square Bashing ? So August and November ? As December is Xmas Month and we all know how busy that gets ? Family stuff !!!
So August and November (Early)

Hence why I said Early November as in the first half of the month which usually means first or 2 nd weekend ? As Stewart pointed out Warfare is the Third weekend and Weymouth weekend is usually the forth weekend !! ????
I am trying to look for the best ideas !!! And best weekends ?
Unless nobody wants to do CWB ?
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: martin goddard on January 20, 2018, 11:03:04 AM
Any November weekend is good for me, except  the weymouth wargames weekend. Do any of the players involved or who want to play  (they are the only ones who matter to this discussion)in CWB go to Reading Warfare. I don't go n I thnk the other CWB players might not go either??
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: Smiley Miley 66 on January 20, 2018, 11:19:20 AM
I must admit, because most of my shopping is on the internet nowadays, I won't be going to Warfare, or least unlikely. So if those that wanted to play CWB, particularly wanted to do Warfare weekend ? But it would then be probably the weekend before Weymouth weekend ! Unless the Players don't have a problem with that either ?
If Players are happy with that ? Then it's a date that could be put forward ? As CWB is usually a more "Local" event than PBI ( thinking mainly of Sean here, maybe Simon if he plays as well ?)
Title: Re: CWB gaming day
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on January 20, 2018, 11:32:26 AM
Miles - very kind of you to think of me, but I'll probably give CWB (at least for this year...) a miss, thanks. I'm already a bit stretched with the new PP periods I've slipped into (and I'm now going to try and do a 1943 army for your PBI day) so I will resist the temptation (for now, although I do rather like the figures...) of slipping into ACW too!

Also, Warfare's my local show so, despite PP not being there (boo!), I'll probably pop along to top up on supplies and see what's going on.

But thank you!

Simon

Peter at Entoyment is apparently re-issuing a planning application for the industrial unit he had previously considered as a new home for his wargaming shop and games venue as the Poole Quay site has not worked out. Duncan can send you a copy of the councils letter if you want to know more. We can support the application by writing (emailing?) to the council department concerned to say what a great idea it is. Good luck Peter.

Are we sure that the Entoyment application has been filed? I've done various searches on the Borough of Poole planning site (proprietor's name; company address...) without success.

Indeed, is the proposed new site actually in Poole, or maybe under a different planning authority?

I am sharing this post: those that like myself go Wargaming!!!
Especially here on the South Coast we need to help Peter and the boys at Entoyment get a larger premises.they need planning permission so we can help. Follow the post below and email Poole planning office.

Entoyment needs more space!   We all know this and Pete is trying to move to a larger unit at:

Unit 2, Fleetsbridge Business Centre, Upton Road, Poole, BH17 7AF

This unit needs change of use and Entoyment have put in for this change of use.   I have sent an email of Support to the Borough of Poole Planning department.  If anyone else would like to do  the same - that would be great:

Email to send to is:  planning@poole.gov.uk
Case Officer is: Helen Harris
Borough of Poole Reference number is: APP/18/00273/C

Simply send an email saying that you support the proposed change of use at Unit 2, Fleetsbridge Business Centre, Upton Road, Poole, BH17 7AF  to allow Entoyment to operate from the premises.     Include the reference number.

Thanks guys.

Peter has posted the CWB gaming day up for the 3rd November, £10 a ticket to include 2 games and allday tea and coffee. Tickets availble on the entoyment website. The only thing this clashes with is Crises, but Martin doesn't go if i remember ?

Sean, your tough northerners will be missed. Early war is fine with me.
My Iron Guard are ready to fight for the cause.

That did make me shake my head. There is plenty of free pornography out there, without putting it up on your wall. The Pirelli days are gone?

Chaps,
This is a briefing to remind all players coming to the CWB day at Entoyment on 3rd November to; a) post a confirmation here that they are attending and; b) book and pay for their place using the Entoyment website. Miles needs to have  firm numbers to plan tables and scenery so please take action now. The cost is £10 including tea and coffee all day. All other details are on this site or ask away if you need more details. That is all.

Good idea Mike.
I have paid and signed up.  Thought I would use early war Confederate?  I can use Union if that creates a balance

Just to remind everyone that is going. It is Early War East or Western armies. So i must remember "no reapeting rifles" So loads of Muskets and a few Rifle Muskets, not too much Cavalry.
Who is bringing a table set up ?
Who is Rebel ? Who is Union ?

I can bring a table set up and I am Union.

See you there.

Title: AVW CWB at Entoyment Poole on Saturday 3rd Novembers.
Post by: martin goddard on November 03, 2018, 08:12:30 PM
A fine day of ACW gaming.  Numbers were reduced. John got eaten by a dragon and Stewart was wing walking. Chris was canoeing. Not sure these are all true but they sound plausible.
As usual the atmosphere was great. Good company and good games. The quality of Entoyment also helped. They provided hot drinks, food and a nice venue.  If you were not there you know who you are.
I got taught a lot of new things about CWB.
Colin showed the most skill at D6 rolling.
Miles shot my Confederate brigades to bits whilst Colin delivered the shwere punkt.
Mike had a 3 general.
Rob was  rolling high all day.
Martin kept introducing rules that "must be there somewhere".

Really good gaming. With no grids :(
Wanted to see the new Stalingrad buildings by flames of war, but forget to look.
Colin took a bunch of photos.

Thanks to Miles for organising the event.

I popped in on my way home from work. The game being played looked good, great scenery (Miles?) with a lot of figures on the table, a lot going on and some toing and froing . Must admit from what I saw Rob was not throwing high unless for a moral role. I did admire the sight of Martin marching his raw infantry brigades out in the open  in front of Miles's veterans dug in around the farm objective - did it go well Martin?

This is a good set of rules and when discussing 15mm v 28mm serves to show 15mm at their best, lots of terrain and figures - looks like a battle rather then a skirmish.

Picked up my 15mm Edward  lV figure too which looks great so thanks Martin.

Chris

It did not go well Chris. Although a slow advance, across open ground against veterans, ensconced in  a building, would be a good chance to rout those yanks.  I was probably unlucky? Lost 2 brigades that way, but did kill a couple of yankee figures!

Quite an enjoyable day. But the numbers are getting less at the moment ?
Goes to show you can have fun on the large games ? My Irish Brigade held their ground as expected...
Roll on the next games day ?
