Title: The new rules
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on January 09, 2017, 10:25:19 AM
I see that the PP team has been busy, and has recently posted up a summary of the soon-to-be-released new rules here:

And a first video of a complete "new MOCB" turn (i.e. both VC + US action seuqueces) in the middle of a game, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5NxQZWErhg

Which is one of a number of PP videos that I'd not previously paid sufficient attention to here: http://www.peterpig.co.uk/videos%20of%20game%20mechanisms.html

It was nice to see some updated PP terrain (those bamboo look rather nice on their watery scenic bases), and Martin provides some very useful ongoing questioning of the players to clarify what they're doing, why and what dice scores they need to achieve it.

The high point for me was Stewart's explanation of a VC base's demise being due to their having "got in the way of a bullet". I believe that the rules may provide a little more clarity on that one. However, this will probably not include an evade action being described as "running away like a girlie" [same culprit, I believe?].

Anyway if you want a feel for some of the new mechanisms (many of which seem to be likely to be cropping up in the next revision of the SCW BAIT rules) and how quickly it all rattles along, you could do worse then investing just under 13 minutes watching this nice little video.

All the Peter Pig video clips are well worth watching.

Yup - I was pleasantly surprised to see how many of them there already are.

A very modern way to be engaging with one's audience - may it continue!

The structured introduction to the rulebook and subsequent key activities in the Regiment of Foote section [similar ones also exist for PBI] are particularly well done and easy to follow.

Let's hope for a similar set of informative bite-sized guides once the MOCB rules are out (can't be long now...).

There is now a pre-order deal on the new rules [13.50 instead of 17.50] advertised about half-way down the Peter Pig home page:

http://www.peterpig.co.uk/index.html

It appears from the rules ordering section:

http://www.peterpig.co.uk/rules.html

that this offer is available until 4th February (i.e. until before 5th February!).

I guess that's in case they don't turn up from the printers, don't want to upset people

Well Vietnam as aperiod is about to kick off at our club, with a guy doing stuff based on the Flames of War rules - and I converted a number of players to try PBI based on that. So, these look good enough for me to preorder and try to hijack Vietnam at my club!

You wont be disappointed, a variety of games can be played between all the various protagonists.
With you able to get all the vietnam kit on the table.  Setup as an infantry game but with all the various tanks, trucks, helicopters.
There are two interesting variants, one for using Montagnards, the other for the recreation of firebases.

As with PP rules the game time and the number of models required has been well thought through.

Hope you enjoy them.

PP are hoping to showcase the rules at the next shows that they are attending.

Does the new MOCB ruleset include any brown water unit options at all?
Title: Re: The new rules
Post by: Colonel Kilgore on February 01, 2017, 04:55:36 PM
@myrm: no - this is an infantry-centric game. There are elements such as armour and helicopters, but these are largely incidental. No boats.

But a number of interestingly-different scenarios and subtlety in the combinations of the forces used.

That's fine, I can leave the waterborne stuff to the other guy then. I think I will be pre-ordering when I get home....

Originally we looked at including brown water stuff and we looked at large armoured forces, but after reading up the period brown water was too complex and lots of armour was untypical until towards the end of the war.

BUT we think that you could use the raiding system from the Viking rules to give yourself the waterborne arrival system.

Played our first game earlier. We did the 'Search and Destroy' mission, although using Soviets and Afghans 1980's.  I'll hopefully get round to writing it up soon. Overall it went well, the rules are very straightforward and after the first few turns the game moved along quickly. The scenarios appear to be deeply embedded in the rules, and look like they give a good feel for the Vietnam War (albeit I don't know much about 'Nam, I got the rules for Soviet-Afghan war). It looks like it'll be a bit harder to get them to work for Afghanistan than I initially thought, however. But first thoughts are very positive. the asymmetry of the victory conditions is well handled.

Oh, pro tip: Make sure your men are 'down' at the end of their turn!

Nice summary - interesting to see the rules re-purposed for another era so soon!

Nice Afghan scenery and figures too: how did you make the square stands of foliage?
Title: Re: The new rules
Post by: usagitsuki on February 08, 2017, 10:39:27 AM
Thanks. I didn't make the foliage, but I think it's sweeping brush bristles covered with small chopped foam-style foliage.

I'm reading through the rules at present and love the new systems.
I have lots Vietnam stuff , but I do have a fair amount of Afghanistan stuff and I think it wold work well for the limited scope of action - which suits Afghanistan perfectly were combats are at platoon level.

But of course with a few small tweeks (loss of helicopters and booby traps) you have a set of rules that spans most periods involving a regular force verse an irregular one. - even ww2 with germans verse partizans.

Early 20th century - foreign legion in Algiers/morocco , british in sudan, british verse boars. or Malaya , Aden. Yemen, even Israel, - ok you may have to tweek the terrain but its got huge potential.
